This was a fascinating read. I have always loved medical history.I have no idea where the other reviewers here are coming from-- somewhere completely devoid of any sense of history, I guess.

A look at the history of birth control.

This book is an interesting view of what women were advised to do to prevent pregnancy in the early 1900s.
Some of the advice is laughable given the advances that have been made in the field of birth control. One piece of advice given by the author is how to wash and reuse a condom! Other advice includes withdrawing the penis before "seed can be planted in the womb" and various types of douches that can "disable the sperm."
I often heard about these methods of birth control when I was younger ( I'm 62) and I never knew where these pieces of folklore came from. Now I do.

Margaret Sanger, "Family Limitation" (1914). (The Library of Congress is celebrating "Books that Shaped America" with a list of 88 titles and an exhibit in Washington.) "While working as a nurse in the New York slums, Margaret Sanger witnessed the plight of poor women suffering from frequent pregnancies and self-induced abortion. Believing that these women had the right to control their reproductive health, Sanger published this pamphlet that simply explained how to prevent pregnancy. Distribution through the mails was blocked by enforcement of the Comstock Law, which banned mailing of materials judged to be obscene. However, several hundred thousand copies were distributed through the first family-planning and birth control clinic Sanger established in Brooklyn in 1916 and by networks of active women at rallies and political meetings."
