In a bid for leadership, the 123 member countries of the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security (CFS) adopted a series of reforms with the aim of becoming the foremost international, inclusive and intergovernmental platform for food security. Central to the reform was the inclusion of participants (including civil society and the private sector) across all activities of the Committee.

Drawing on data collected from policy documents, interviews and participant observation, this book examines the re-organization and functioning of a UN Committee that is coming to be known as a best practice in global governance. Framed by key challenges that plague global governance, the impact and implication of increased civil society engagement are examined by tracing policy negotiations within the CFS, in particular, policy roundtables on smallholder sensitive investment and food price volatility and negotiations on the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, and the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition. 

The author shows that through their participation in the Committee, civil society actors are influencing policy outcomes. Yet analysis also reveals that the CFS is being undermined by other actors seeking to gain and maintain influence at the global level. By way of this analysis, this book provides empirically-informed insights into increased participation in global governance processes.

WRITTEN IN THE 90'S, ABOUT THE 70'S, AND STILL APPROPRIATE FOR TODAY'S WORLD!

One of the best books written on the subject of espionage and terrorism. The time and labor involved in creating and controlling agents. The ofttimes "greater good" dictating possible harm to our friends, and more often than not, minimal results are attained. The one constant throughout, at every level of government, remains POLITICS.

Good spy book

Good spy book. Lots of tense moments where stuff could go wrong too easily. As an added bonus, the reader gets a good idea of why peace in the Middle East will be so hard to achieve, if that's even possible. The book helped me have a deeper appreciation for the dynamics and personalities of the various factions of which there are many.

Compelling, Informative, More Relevant than Ever

CIA operative Tom Roger's work in Lebanon (from the 1960s to the 1980s) is this book's basis. It is no wonder that this is reputed to be required reading at "The Farm" due to the author's understanding of Lebanese politics, his apparent understanding of a case officer's acitivities, and the continuing grim relevance of terrorism.

It will help you understand why the CIA and Mossad can be such antagonists at times.

Two downsides to the book: some of the substance is offset by gratuitous sexual content, which in parts makes it seem more like a trashy summer romance novel than a potential intel classic. Also, there could have been some more character development, especially with some of the major players.

This section also discusses the pathogenesis of potentially serious side effects such as skin rashes and liver disorders, and the role of pharmacogenetics in both drug effect and side effects. Outstanding chapters on movement disorders, epilepsy, and headaches cover major areas of drug treatment in neurology practice. Additional chapters cover stroke, increased intracranial pressure in the intensive care unit, dementia, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and spasticity, neuromuscular disorders and pain. Sleep, central nervous system infections and HIV, and drug intoxications are also covered. Areas of special interest to child neurologists covered in the book include treatment of genetic metabolic disorders and use of stimulants and other medications for childhood cognitive disorders. An excellent chapter is also provided on drug treatment of psychiatric disorders because of the important of psychiatric drugs in neurology practice. This edition has been completely re-written from the successful edition published in the 90s and enlarged commensurate with the exciting progress in treatment in neurology.

Robert A. Gross MD, PhD, is Professor of Neurology and of Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center as well as the Director of Strong Epilepsy Center.
