recommended mandatory reading for every human being

this is a unique,thorough. and entertaining-yet-serious description of how we should all treat others..... NOT an instruction book, nor a book of rules.....simply how to show respect to our fellow human beings. The hardback edition is much easier on the eyes than the softcover/paperback edition.

Short and sweet. For anyone who loves to get a hand-written thank you note, a birthday card in the mail, or the perfect gift just because-this book is for you. Donald McCullough first is a magical writter, and second a wise and kind teacher.
We need to get back to the nature of caring and doing the little things that make human life special. Saying please and thank you are such fundimental human feelings, the loss of these words in our language will no doubt be the loss of the very threads that help to create the weaving which is the nicer side of our human family.
The gift for all ocassions (I purchased 20 of them!) and a great place to start with the kids. Help us keep the sweetness of human kindness alive, read and enjoy "Say Please, Say Thank You...!

You said it!

I wish I could drop millions of copies of this book from the sky. It should be required reading by every human being. Has the author been on Oprah? Larry King? Good Morning America? Today? Rosie? How about a PBS special? If so, I'm sorry I missed those segments. If not, then where's his publicist? Can we get rid of Dr. Laura and replace her with Donald McCullough?
It would be such a lovely world if we were all to get back to the basics of mutual respect and consideration. There would be a lot less stress in today's world if everyone followed the very simple principles in this book.
Buy it, read it, share it, and most importantly, DO IT. You'll stand out among the herd--that's for sure.

poor in terms of material - just plain roleplay ideas

The reason I gave a 2-star rating is that the material is really poor. The author introduces some roleplay ideas, but there is no supportive material. My students cannot perform the roleplay without any vocabulary knowledge or any guidance of how they can use the language needed. The first and most important part of communication classes is to present the topic and guide them before they can actually talk to each other. This book completely lacks this material. Definitely isn't worth the money.

What a wonderful resource for teachers wanting to incorporate communicative learning and teaching into their own pedagogy. The role-play situations included in the book are presented through real-world contexts and allow students to creatively incorporate their own back ground knowledge of the given topics and portray the situations through their own cultural lens. Doing so allows the situations in the book to share and teach different cultural perspectives about the various provocative topics.

Detailed lesson plans and accompanying supplemental material are included with each situation and teachers need only to minimally modify to meet the needs of the different proficiency levels of their classes. This is A MUST resource to add to any teachers' repertoire to foster engaging and meaningful speaking and learning experiences!

This book is a great resource for any teacher! There is a wide array of role plays to choose from, and the best part is their adaptability. You can include specific grammar or other areas of focus (giving advice, expressing opinions, etc.) for a class very easily. I also like the discussion questions given after each role play. You can use some of the discussion questions to generate warm up responses at the beginning of a class or just use them (as recommended in the book) as a follow up activity. Having enough material to pick and choose from as well as pre-prepped really fun and adaptable activities is a major bonus. This book is awesome!

Best hurricane recovery device ever!

This book is so much fun! I'm "borrowing" lines from it daily. (Ok. I'm really "stealing" lines from it, but I usually admit where I got them.) We just went through nine days without heat or electricity because of Sandy, so a good laugh is just what we needed. Barb Best is like a clever, sassy, friend who has something funny to say about every subject. I know lots of people who need something to laugh about right now, so it will make a welcomed gift. Hope she writes another soon.

Mailer as Literary Critic Intrigues

There is much to argue with in "The Prisoner of Sex", and though I'm in sympathy with the aims of the womens' movement, I cheer Mailers' defense of the artists right to use their sexuality and sense of the sensual world as proper fodder for poetic expression.
There are times when Mailer- the- mystic clogs up an otherwise lacerating arguement,where his romanticism veers dangerously towards a lunatics hallucinations, but his defense of Miller, Lawrence and Genet against the clumsier moments of Millets' orginal critique in "Sexual Politics" is literary criticism at its most emphatic.
"Prisoner of Sex" is, I'm afraid, incoherant at times, but there are long passages of rich knock-out prose that demonstrate why Mailer is thought by many to be one of the premiere stylists of the times, and if nothing else, his lyrical defense of D.H.Lawrence is worth the purchase by itself.

Mailer shreds the cant of women's liberation

There is much to argue with in "The Prisoner of Sex", and though I'm in sympathy with the aims of the womens' movement, I cheer Mailers' defense of the artists right to use their sexuality and sense of the sensual world as proper fodder for poetic expression. What makes the book important is precisely the fact that Mailer felt there was a need for a man to stand up and have a word against and about the rising tide of Feminist theory; while many male writers were too confused, adrift in daydreams of irony or bottled up rage, and while the academy was surrendering its arms without a shot being fired, Mailer spoke up and wrote that there was a profound and important difference between the sexes, and that while social justice must and will prevail regarding the rights of women in the work place and overall social sphere, one cannot maintain, straight faced, that the only difference between the sexes has to do with genitalia.

Overall pleasing review with an agreeable portrait of Millet

This work, although not typical of Mailer, was of his best. Mailer portrays his views of feminism by tearing apart Kate Millet and her take on feminism. Despite the common perception of this book as an anti-feminist work, Mailer clearly respects the basis of feminism.
