S.O.R. Losers is a good read for all!

S.O.R. Losers is a humorous book about a group of intelligent and talented, but non-athletic, seventh grade boys who are required to participate on a soccer team at their sports-minded school. The boys on the losing team are viewed by parents and school administration as rebellious and are frowned upon because of their "bad" attitudes. What's wrong with accepting the fact that you stink at sports anyway? Avi portrays realistic characters and a humorous style of writing in this book, making it a good read for all ages! (And for those curious Avi fans, you'll find his last name spelled backwards in this book!)

Want to teach the concept of imagery and simile to your students with fun and laughter? Then, this is the book for you. Avi creates loveable characters we can all identify with, no matter our age. When the "royal" blue jerseys of the "Buckingham" team appear on the well-groomed soccer field, the reader has a good idea as to what will happen to the S.O.R. 7th grade misfits dressed in red and yellow clown colors! But, will this rag-tag team ever win a game?

Have you ever been forced to playa sport? If so S.O. R Loser by Avi is the perfect book for you. A young man named Sitrow loves school but hates sports. he has to see his way through playing soccer. The kid named Sitrow was going to pick a sport for the school team but he missed baseball, basketball, tennis and football. The only thing is left is soccer. The only thing he hates about the school rules are that you must play one sport a year. His coach Mr. Lesster (also the social studies the teachers) push the team through their unlucky year.
Their parents are behind them all the way.
They had practice a couple days later. They really needed help. They could not even score on their own goal. When Sitrow gets home he starts complaining at dinner about how stupid that soccer is. The parents don't care they think that some exercise is good for the smart young man. The next day when he enters his 8th period which is Social Studies and which Mr. Lesster is the teacher. Mr. lesster announces that they are going out side to practice soccer.
They had a practice, a week from that day and their 1st game and it was bad 32-0. The coach was mad but he knew that it was only the first game. The next 4 games they lost. Now he whole school was cheering for them to win. The principal was telling them that the soccer team never lost. Will they keep losing or will the come back and be victorious.

what most schroomers are interest in

As an avid schroomer and an educator in collecting and identifying mushrooms most folks I know always ask the question "is it edible?". This book helps to answer that question. The author also put enough caution into his book that a reader would find out that one can never be too careful when consuming wild mushrooms. The pictures and descriptions are excellant. The author also goes into the relationship between certain trees and the mushroom itself. This helps the new schroomer know where to search for a certain species. A great help on this subject!!!!!!

Wonderful guide!

This is my third mushroom guide, and so far is my favorite, followed closely by "Audubon's Field Guide to Mushrooms". The photos in Michael Kuo's book are wonderful, the descriptions are clear, and I especially like that it has a section especially for "beginners" (of which I am one) that describes a few edibles that aren't easily confused with anything else. This section has helped me to locate safe edibles in my area. I'm loving this book and carry it with me in my vehicle. You just never know when or where you might spot an interesting fungi! I highly recommend this book!

Great Book!

This is a beautiful book that is a wonderful addition to my collection of mushroom books. The large, full color photos are especially appreciated.

If you want to expand your knowledge of mushrooms and enjoy reading well written and sometimes entertaining mushroom lore in easy-to-understand plain English, you will love this book.

All the measurements are metric. Since my brain refuses to make the conversion, I read the descriptions with a ruler that features inches and centimeters in hand.

The section on poisonous mushrooms is especially good, and the Focus Points are great. I keep returning to this book again and again after consulting other mushroom guides, and it often answers questions about specific mushrooms that the other books leave unanswered.

I also use Michael Kuo's excellent online identification keys for mushrooms not covered in this book.

Highly recommended.

Julie Feinstein is collection manager of the Ambrose Monell Cryo Collection at the American Museum of Natural History. She has authored numerous scientific papers and has done biological field research in the rainforests of French Guiana and Peru and the cloud forest of Taiwan. An avid birder, Feinstein has been birdwatching in every continent except Australia and Antarctica. She blogs about urban wildlife at www.urbanwildlifeguide.net. She lives in Brooklyn.

Best Field Guide I've encountered

I've used many field guides in my life, and I can state unequivocally that Julie Feinstein's "Field Guide to Urban Wildlife" is the most helpful and interesting that I have encountered! The photographs are beautiful, many of them striking, many intriguing. The descriptions and explanations are straightforward and informative. There are fascinating stories, anecdotes and facts; there is more than enough relevant material for both the scientifically curious and the casual browser. The author transmits a very apparent affection and respect for the animals she describes. This is a work of scholarship that the lay reader and the biologist can enjoy. I have used it numerous times to identify and learn about species of wildlife in my city.

An entertaining and informative book.

"Field Guide to Urban Wildlife" by Julie Feinstein is an informative, entertaining, and delightful read. I learned many things about our urban wildlife companions that I never knew before. Such as: The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world and can dive at speeds of up to 200 mph! Such as: Barn Owls can turn their heads 180 degrees, just like the girl in "The Exorcist." One of the best things about this book is that it's not written in the style of a dry doctor's thesis, but instead is written in a lively manner which makes it fun to read. Also, the book is filled with color pictures of the urban creatures Ms. Feinstein is describing. Among them is a Red-Tailed Hawk who decided to nest on a windowsill of the famed American Museum of Natural History, in New York, where Ms. Feinstein works. It must have been there as a way of saying "Thanks, Julie."

At last there is a book that has been written about urban wildlife that is not only educational but extremely entertaining. It was hard to put down. My husband and I live in a wooded area and are fascinated, and sometimes saddened, by how wildlife has been forced to adapt to survive. This book explains it all! I plan on purchasing this book as a gift for some fellow animal lovers.

Good idea, poor execution

This short book (32 pages) tries to provide a service--helping people preparing to go through a divorce understand the process a little better and think rationally about how to proceed. It succeeds a little bit. But it fails a lot. A good editor would have helped, i think, becuase Judge Sexton does have some good ideas. But the prose bounces around from idea to idea, is fairly non-specific, sometimes uses jargon without defiining terms, other times uses silly, condescending explanations of jargon. I'm a lawyer, and have been through divorce myself, and i did not come away with many clear ideas from this book. I do not do divorce law (though i did many years ago), so i have no bone to pick with the advice she gives. It is just not well written. Also, I do not like the way she trashes lawyers. She is one, she says her friends who do divorce law are good people and good lawyers, so why is all the rhetoric about lawyers negative? Pandering is how it reads.

All that said, if you have no familiarity with divorce or lawyers, and you are getting ready to go through it, this book is better than nothing, is inexpensive, and will help you a little. It's worth $2.99 and 30 minutes to read through.

Poor Judge Poor Book

Susan Sexton writing about divorce is as insulting as Hitler going for a Nobel Peace Prize. The only thing that holds true is the two are as estranged to their goals as can be. A 30 page romp through terrible advice from a Judge who's listened to about 2 years of divorce cases, is retiring and now trying to make money somehow. Stay away from this title unless you want advice from someone who ignores the law herself.
