Yes let's celebrate this experience!

I love this book and I bought it as a gift for my daughter who has been complaining about her physical appearance due to her pregnancy. I'm hoping she will appreciate the beauty of the pregnant woman as captured in these wonderful photos. I only wish Ms. Garbarino had been around when I was having my own children. A photo like one of these would have been a true keepsake.

Gorgeous!

This wonderful collection presents women at a unique moment - the latest month of pregnancy, some of them just days before delivery. Each one wanted to be remembered at her fullest, so had the picture taken. (Probably many pictures, if the photo shoots in my experience mean anything.) More than that, each woman here wanted to be seen. She made her picture public, so the whole world can appreciate her as she was then.
In fact, most of the mothers-to-be made their bare selves very public, choosing outdoor settings for the camera. Some chose quiet parks and distant forest settings, but others chose city streets, the Golden Gate or Brooklyn bridge, a New York subway - the photographer herself chose Times Square when her turn came. Even with pre-dawn privacy, those are hardly private places. Perhaps that just emphasizes that so much of pregnancy is public, not just being seen grand and full, but the fact of it as experience shared between mothers everywhere, of every place and time. Garbarino underlines that universality with models from across the spectrum of color and look - whatever the outer differences, the grace of the human animal comes through the same way.
Still, these photos make clear every mother and pregnancy is unique. Brief notes by most models show how each family, each woman, even each of a woman's children is different, from the trials of difficult conception, through trials of the changing body, to the trials of delivery. And each full body seems different, too: some (like Lori and Angeliki) sleeker, others (like Debbie and Joelle) full to bursting. There's so much more to say, but really, the pictures themselves say it best. This collection is one to enjoy, not just for mothers, their partners, and even their children, but for anyone who truly delights in every part of a woman's life.

The Perfect Baby Shower Gift

This is a stunning coffee table book of pregnant nudes in the most witty and inspiring outdoor environments. Before a pregnant woman contends with the metamorphosis that is motherhood, she will experience a physical transformation that is, in its own way, as mind-boggling. The women in Ripe -- of all sizes and colors (and sexual orientations) -- meld with natural forms (trees, corn husks, sea boulders) or stand in contrast to the grittiest and most iconic urban settings. Each photo is lush and beautifully composed, some locations unbelievably daring (i.e. Times Square, a subway car, and in one heartbreaking shot, a sunny street opening on the World Trade Center) and all affirm the the goddess-like splendor of pregnancy. Several eloquent narratives by the models round out this portrait of a transient high point in our lives as women. A fun and affirmative gift for a mother-to-be.
