I would definitely apply what I have learn from this guide!

For someone who is not really familiar with computer languages or programming I may have thought that it is hard or confusing to learn about Python programming. When I got the chance to read this book, I realized that learning Python isn’t that complicated. And it is a big plus that this guide provides a clear step by step guide from the very first thing to do or to know the basics of Python programming. I would definitely apply what I have learn from this guide.

A sturdy, inexpensive printing of an excellent textbook

I teach a course in Applied Statistics (Computer Science and Software Engineering) using this book. The book's explanations are clear, the examples are well-chosen and there is a large collection of exercises. There are answers for about half the exercises in the back of the book, and the publisher sells a reasonably-priced student manual with full solutions to this half of the exercises.

In this note, I'm reviewing the 8th Economy Edition, an Asian reprint of the American book that sells at a much lower cost. Several of my students use this edition instead of the American 8th and I have a copy of it. The book is paperback, so it is not indestructible, but all of the copies I've seen are standing up well to heavy use. The print is clear. The graphics are greyscale rather than the American edition's color, but I don't see any resulting ambiguity or loss of information. Overall, this edition appears to be a fully-functional substitute for the full-price textbook.

Recommend purchasing any other statistics book

As a former student of statistics, I do not recommend purchasing this text. The book possesses multiple grammatical errors (many of which confuse the context of the problem), multiple incorrect answers provided in the back of the book, and multiple mistakes in the given information for a problem. This book will utilize variables without explanation, pose "real world" problems with little to no contextual background required to solve the problem, and skip many important topics vital to real world applications. I am currently writing to the editor in an effort to receive a refund for this book. I would NOT recommend this text to any student or professional.

Not Good

This is probably the second worst textbook I have ever read. I have struggled through the third chapter. In some cases, the text seems as though it was written for elementary school math covering set therory: extremely detailed and excessively verbose. In other cases, the text throws out examples without explaining any reasoning, or any how or why a formula is used.

The text continually refers to examples in previous sections, which forces the reader to search back through the text. The interuption is distracting and annoying. In many cases, the page numbers where the example can be found are not given. The text also does this with the exercises, forcing the student to wear-out the pages. Sometimes, I feel as though I need two copies of the textbook so I don't waste so much time thumbing back and forth.

I have ended up reading and re-reading the text while trying to understand some of the concepts and rational. In some areas, the author does not explain anything. While other times, the text continues for pages explaining things that an elementry school graduate should know. I am waiting to see multiplication tables in future chapters. All the while, some college level information is brushed-over. I typically need to work several exercises and beat my head against the wall a few times until I go ah ha! Why didn't the author explain this.

With textbooks like this, it is no wonder engineers have a reputation for poor communication skills.

About the Author

Lars Ohrstrom, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

Lars Ohrstrom is a Swedish inorganic chemist who has also worked in France, Botswana, Switzerland, and the USA. He was educated at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and currently he is professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. At Chalmers he has devoted much time to teaching and curriculum development for the first year chemistry courses and recently he has made a number of popular science podcasts for Chemistry World magazine. His main research interest is in Metal-Organic Frameworks, which are new types of potentially porous materials with budding technological applications, especially in green and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

Guardians of history

The battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E. has usually been relegated by modern historians to being nothing more than a "symbolic gesture" of Greek resolve during the Persian war. Although it WAS that, it was also much, much more.
The importance of this present book is that it sets the matter straight. The sub-title of the work is in no way an exaggeration. The 300 Spartans + the allies who held the pass @ Thermopylae protected the Greek fleet at Artemesium and bought time for the armada to mobilize at Salamis. The importance of this cannot be over-stated.
In this treatise, Ernle Bradford takes us back to that long-ago period of world history. Much more than being simply an extrapolation of Book VII of Herodotus' HISTORIES, here is a study that offers a superb look at the weapons, armor, ships, tactics and logistical difficulties of both the Greeks and Persians. The attention Bradford pays to the minutest details of the classical historians allows him to reason out conclusions that may not have been evident upon a first-reading.
Beyond Thermopylae, Bradford also has brief discussions of both Salamis and Platea. The over-all thrust of the book, however, is to put into context just how pivotal Thermopylae actually was in reference to these other, more well known battles.
While the parallels that he draws between the Persian war and World War II are occasionally a bit strained, it must be remembered that it is a typical method employed by military historians to draw comparisons and contrasts between ancient conflicts and those of his own day. As Bradford fought in WWII himself, it is natural that he should use it as a frame-of-reference for how he perceives warfare throughout the ages.
This book is HIGHLY recommended as standard-reading for all War-colleges, persons interested in classical history and (most of all) those who have more than a passing-curiousity about the Spartans.
As your head hits the pillow tonight, remember that some 2,500 years ago 300 Spartans stood on a wall & fought to the last man in a battle that they knew they could not win. They left their beloved Sparta KNOWING that they would never see it again. They were aware that their life only had a few sunrises left in it, yet this did not slow their march to Thermopylae for even a moment. It is because of their sacrifice that you are where you are today; defenders of the pass. Guardians of history.

Inconsistent, but a quick and light read

Bradford's "Thermopylae" is actually a history of the second invasion of Greece by the Persian Empire. It is more the story of the Athenian fleet and the major Greek proponent of a combined sea and land strategy, Themistocles, than it is of the Spartan and Thespian hoplites who sacrificed themselves at the Hot Gates. The text is engaging, and I was surprised at hopw quickly I went through this book. However, I found myself bothered by several things. First, the author continually warns about drawing modern parallels with the way ancients thought, but constantly uses modern parallels (including the worn-out and inaccurate comparison of Sparta to Nazi Germany). Second, his sources are all secondary (including translations as secondary sources), so the auuthority of the book is questionable. Third, he is decidedly pro-Athenian despite the title of the book and continuous warnings about his major source's (Herodotus) biases. What all this leads to is a story of how Athens defeated the Persians. One might just get the feeling that the Spartans and Thermopylae were quite unnecessary to the Athenian victory. I'm not an expert on ancient Greece, but somehow I don't think that Leonidas and the 300 Spartans (and their Thespian allies) would have been memorialized and remembered for 2500 years if their sacrifice was irrelevant. Bottom line...read this if you want a good, quick read on the second Greco-Persian War. If you want a good read about Thermopylae alone, read the novel "Gates of Fire."

Good Overview of the Greco-Persian Conflict

I enjoyed this book as a good overview of the Greek & Persian conflict in the 5th Century BC. The text is easy to read, and the author provided some personal interjections that often (but not always) were thought-provoking. Bradford's more even-handed approach to the 'Great King' Xeres and his campaign (e.g., the meticulous preparation by the Persians) is a welcome change from the overly pro-Athenian historical record.
The title of this book is rather misleading as coverage of the actual battle of Thermopylae is only a small portion of the narrative (though it is oft referred to). The constant bickering of the Greek City States is highlighted (perhaps once too often), and the concise background setting to the battles is handled quite well.
After perusing this book, it will be abundantly clear why the underdog Greek Hoplite was able to defeat the numerically superior Persians (and their allies) in battle - outstanding leadership, logistics advantages, cunning tactics, and superior weaponry.

This book is a must for women who want to succeed in the corporate world and it will definitely help men, too. Steele tells it like it is and will win no awards for political correctness. I wish I'd had this book when I was 25.

Not a sensitive and delusional New Age guide, this is a book that attacks the issues bluntly, examines them and offers practical and creative solutions for men, as well as women. Simple, direct and unshakeable solutions that work.

Not for those wishing to believe in fairy tales, "Office Politics" shoots straight from the hip and offers young women who wish to work in the high-paying corporate sector plenty of excellent advice on what the workplace is really like and how to maneuver in it to their best advantage. I have never read anything as honest as "Office Politics"---it also includes an excellent bibliography of other must read books.
"O.P." is essential for any woman wishing to enter or re-enter the corporate world---however, it is not "politically correct", which makes it all the more effective as a tool for moving up in the "real world". Overall, it's the best book I have ever read on strategies for working women.

Outstanding work!!

When I heard another biography on Rocky Marciano was coming out, I thought I knew the story from the previous ones I read but as a huge fan of Rocky and boxing, I was looking forward to any new material I could get. Well I was more than happy and surprised at the amount of new and interesting information the author has presented to us. The book is very well researched, complete with extensive chapter notes. It is a no-nonsense approach to this great champions life. It brings him out as a human and sheds light on his struggle to rise through lifes obstacels and attain his highest goals. This approach I think, makes Rocky all the more impressive and someone we can relate to. The subject was not put forth as a mythical hero but a true human hero to many which is refreshing in our present world filled with many built up figures with no foundation. This is a work to be proud of and I eagerly wait for Volume 2.

John Cameron has done a marvelous job in researching Rocky Marciano such that one can sense the presence of the Rock today. Mr Cameron has done Marciano fans proud in giving this great champion the honor and respect he so deserves. This work lends creedance and honor to the Heavyweight Championship belt and what it take and means to be "Heavyweight Champion" which has not been upheld, in my opinion, by today's titleholders. In his day, Rocky was a Champion of the People, especially Italian American people. Mr Cameron's work inspires a new generation of boxing fans to look back and discover the "Triangle of Success" ( Sense of Duty, Respect for Authority and Family, and a Strong Mental Discipline) that Rocky lived by and propelled this incredible man to the crown and into the hearts of All People. I can't wait for Volume 2. Cheers to you Mr. Cameron and Thank you.

Sports fans and historians must read

This is a great book very well researched and leaves the reader wanting the next volume NOW! Everyone can enjoy this book who has a slight interest in history in sport. The grammer and spelling in the book can get annoying but it is easy to look past as it is a riveting read, maybe a new editor or proof reader is required.
