Incredible book on prayer

First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Charles Stanley and his publisher for sending me a copy of "Handle With Prayer" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

"Handle With Prayer" is a superb prayer resource. This book by Charles Stanley is not only a 13-session study on prayer with an amazing leader guide. It is not just a non-fiction book that will teach you some helpful tips about how to pray. It is a compilation of chapters that address 13 different aspects of prayer. With subjects ranging from prayer life assessment to who should we pray for to how to pray God's will, this volume should be in the reference library of every praying man, woman and child. "Handle With Prayer" takes you back to the Bible to learn about prayer.

I confidently recommend this book to any Christian who wants to invigorate their own prayer life. I believe that it would be valuable to any group or personal study venue. "Handle With Prayer" is one book that I am proud to own and will read and refer to over-and-over again. It is also a book that I will suggest to others for years to come.

Great book on Prayer

This is a very good book on prayer. This book reads as if Dr. Stanley is not preaching at the reader on prayer, but personally took the time to write this book. There is so much information in this book and far too much to articulate in a review so I will just highlight a few good quotes. On page 28, Dr. Stanley says that it is on our knees that the greatest good is done, and on our knees that we will face our greatest assaults. In chapter 3, the focus is in prayer in fasting. I admit that I have not done much fasting in my life and my hope is that this book will help aide in this area. On page 46, Dr. Stanley challenges the reader to spend a day alone with God fasting and praying. I have personally spent a few hours alone with God away from cell phones, the Internet, and other distractions and really enjoyed myself. The final chapter speaks of spiritual warfare in prayer. Humanism is addressed on page 139 and what a problematic issue this philosophy is in our postmodern day. So much self-help material, and books are out there that are humanistic based. Charles Stanley challenges the reader to get to the Bible and the Lord in his/her prayers. The Lord is the sufficiency and He is more than enough to meet the needs of the Christian. Other contents of the chapter address sin strongholds and how to overcome them and how strong they can be so often in the life of the Christian believer. Well done book, highly recommend!

Unwrap God's Love

Are you wanting to get deeper into the word of prayer and learn to unwrap God's strength and power by praying. As I was searching for a picture of the cover , I noticed that in February 1992 when I was five years old , Charles Stanley wrote a book called Handle With Prayer - reading this one and the blurb of the previous , I figured that this new edition must be an updated and more up with the play as the one written those many moons ago. For me, personally I find Prayer quite a challenge as I can pray for myself silently for protection , pray to keep others safe and those other everyday prayers like "Dear Lord, please find us a carpark" when you enter the shopping mall and its so busy. However, Prayer is actually something much deeper than that , it is something that Jesus used and there have been other accounts by everyday people to make miracles happen , people raise from the dead , others have sickness healed that may never have been healed. Prayer is essential to us all as Christians and believers, as without prayer we do not have the connection we require from God.

Keeps our son entertained for hours

This book didn't need any photos (and worries about copyright infringement kept me from taking any), but it is really great. My son absolutely loves the Angry Birds, and this keeps him enthralled and entertained for hours, day after day. Thankfully, we had it for an airplane trip, and it kept him occupied for a large part of the flight. He loves looking through each character summary and learning all about that character. It is a fun way for him to learn how to use a reference book, and we have no problem letting him enjoy himself in the process! Good buy!

This is an awesome book. It has all sorts of background information about all The characters and the town. This is the best book and I highly recommend it, my 6 year old loves it. I took away one star because the pages have such a great texture and are done so well but the binding is terrible and cuts off some words and started falling apart right away. It is a shame because I love it and it isn't going to last too long

About the Author
Christopher E. Smith is Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned degrees at Harvard University, the University of Bristol (England), the University of Tennessee, and the University of Connecticut. Trained as a lawyer and social scientist, he is the author of 25 books and more than 100 scholarly articles on law, courts, and criminal justice policy. He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher with MSU's "Teacher-Scholar Award" and "Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award." His other books with Cengage Learning/Wadsworth include CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA, Eighth Edition (with George Cole and Christina DeJong), LAW AND CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONS, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS: MYTHS AND REALITIES, and CRIMINAL PROCEDURE.

Daniel M. Shea is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College. He is the author of several books on American politics, including TRANSFORMING DEMOCRACY: LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGNS AND POLITICAL PARTIES (1995), CAMPAIGN MODE: THE STRATEGY TACTICS AND ART OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT (1996 AND 2001), CAMPAIGN MODE: STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP IN CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS (with Michael John Burton, 2002). Shea has edited numerous other books dealing with parties, elections, Congress, and the politics of the media, and has written articles for a number of journals. He lives in Meadville, PA with his wife Christine Gatto-Shea and three children.

I received the correct item in great condition. It didn't ship as fast as I would have liked, considering I was using the book for a class that had already started, but if I had ordered ahead of time the entire process would have been great!

Expensive Activist Handbook

I have used this book to teach introductory US government at the college level, and would never willingly use it again. The authors seek to combat student apathy by turning them into social activists, whether or not they know anything about the objects of their activism. Apathy may be a problem, but ignorance is a far worse one.

The ideological imbalance is another problem with this text. It contains a number of "pathways," which are really vignettes of social activists in our history. While these are engaging, it is strange that for the authors, only Liberals can be activists. You will find a discussion of the Equal Rights Amendment, but no "pathway" for Phyllis Schlafly, the woman who more or less single-handedly de-railed the ERA Ratification Express. Richard Viguerie, the inventor of the direct-mail techniques that led to the formation of dozens of influential policy and political organizations, is not here; nor is Terry Dolan, whose use of negative campaigning in 1980 produced a net gain of 12 seats for Republicans in the Senate. No Grover Norquist, probably the most effective advocate for tax limitation and reform in the last 30 years (no Art Laffer, either, an indicator of a general skimpiness on economic factors).

The result is a politically-slanted textbook designed to produce an army of parti-educated shock troops for a Liberal agenda.

GREAT BOOK

I bought it for my college studying. Expected that it would be so boring. Also it has overwhelming amount of terminology you physically are not able to memorize, it explains very precisely which rights are granted to us by the Constitution of USA, how government is functioning, what is behind those Amendments we hear about, how any law makes it way to people, etc. This book is a great source for understanding of the political processes in this country. Definitely recommend it to everyone.

About the Author

Trent C. Butler is a freelance author and editor. He served ten years on the faculty of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Rüschilkon, Switzerland, and for twenty-two years as editor and editorial director for Holman Bible Publishers and LifeWay. He wrote the Word Biblical Commentary volume on Joshua, the Layman’s Bible Book Commentary on Isaiah, the Holman Old Testament Commentaries on Isaiah and Hosea through Micah, and the Holman New Testament Commentary on Luke. He served on the editorial Board of the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and edited the Holman Bible Dictionary. Dr. Butler has a Ph.D. in biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University, has done further study at Heidelberg and Zurich, and has participated in the excavation of Beersheba. 

Nancy L. deClaissé-Walford (PhD, Baylor University) is the Carolyn Ward Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the author of Reading from the Beginning: The Shaping of the Hebrew Psalter, Biblical Hebrew: An Introductory Textbook, Introduction to the Psalms: A Song from Ancient Israel, and The Book of Psalms (NICOT).

Peter H. Davids (PhD, University of Manchester) is visiting professor in Christianity at Houston Baptist University and visiting professor of Bible and applied theology Houston Graduate School of Theology. Great Revision.

Here is a full-scale revision of Mr. Butler’s 1983 offering to the Word Biblical Commentary series. I can say upfront that this is the best revision by the same author that I have ever seen done in a major commentary series. I own the older volume and this revision has numerous upgrades. So many upgrades, in fact, that it had to grow to two volumes.

Reading the new Author’s Preface you can tell Mr. Butler was surprised that his earlier edition of this commentary was not as well received by conservatives as he expected. While he tried to explain himself at great lengths to prove that he was more conservative than thought, he nevertheless brought this commentary more squarely into the conservative camp by what he wrote this time. I still don’t agree with him on compositional issues, but really appreciate the direction he came.

In volume 1 he has a three part Introduction. The first part is about textual issues and he makes the Masoretic Text his focus. Then he gives a major, impressive section on a “Review of Critical Research”. With a deft hand he brings us from Keil to the present. It could serve as a prototype of what a history of interpretation ought to look like. It was fascinating to see all the zany sidewalks of thought in the study of Joshua, but you will be up to speed on where scholarship has gone before. The final part covers things like ethical and theological issues,

The rest of the volume is commentary in the typical WBC format covering Joshua 1-12.

There are many other helpful additions including some well done charts that were not present in the first edition. The visual additions really aid comprehending what he is saying. There are massive bibliographies throughout that will delight the scholars too.

All in all, this set is a winner and will be around for years to come.
