Robust and comprehensive guide to the new SAT's grammar

As an SAT tutor, I recommend certain books to my students so that they can accomplish as much as possible outside of my office. The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar is the most helpful book I've yet seen for the new SAT (which will debut in March of 2016). Here are a few reasons why:

1. The book is comprehensive. I've been teaching SAT prep for a long time, and most of my students are fairly to highly serious about their scores. I'm glad to be able to offer them a workbook that covers everything, rather than one that covers most of the test.

2. Practice question realism is very good. It's essential that students get used to the nuances and style of the real test, and unlike books published by most companies, this one aptly mimics the complexities of real SAT passages and questions.

3. It's up-to-date. The new SAT writing section is much different than that of the current SAT. This book reflects all the changes we know about right now.

4. The book cross-references the College Board / Khan Academy tests, so that students can look up authentic questions on which to practice concepts.

The only real criticism I have of the book is the formatting and look - it might be easier for certain students to use if the graphic design and layout were more engaging. But this is easily the best book on the market for students who truly want to understand the material.

A favorite for both tutor and student

I agree with Vince Kotchian on all his points. I am a tutor and I know my students work well with the lessons in this book. They read the grammar rules for a topic like subject-verb agreement, then they do her exercises. Step by step, my students master each rule. I'm so glad she took the time to make up so many questions for practice. I can assign some for HW after we do a few together. It's great for self-prep as well.

DO NOT USE!

Like the others who have reviewed this book, I am a professional test prep instructor (GMAT, SAT and ACT). I'm not sure what the other instructors see in this book, but there are clearly a lot of errors. Since this is about the new SAT, I'd expected the usual errors, such as typos and mistakes in underlining or answer choices. What I did not expect were mistakes with basic subject-verb agreement and rudimentary grammar. For example, in English, the words some, any, none, all and most can be used as singular or plural. "Some food is on the table." "Some guests are sitting at the table." Yet the author says "any" and "none" are only singular while the others are only plural. Thus, in the book, the use of "any" (I forgot the exact sentence) was used incorrectly in a sentence in a practice exercise. I believe it was something like, "If any participants are sick..." This, according to the book, is grammatically incorrect. It should read, "If any participants is sick..." After seeing this, we no longer use this book at work.

I realize I'm in the minority here, so for the sake of the students learning from this book I sincerely hope the author corrects her mistakes in later editions.

Contributors include such noted bloggers as Joe Clark, Cameron Barrett, and Giles Turnbull. The discussion covers the history and community of weblogs, contrasts weblogs and traditional journalism, and offers advice on starting a weblog. If you have been following weblogs for the past few years you've probably come across many of these articles online, but having them available in one collection gives them context. A glossary and good references round out this well-edited anthology. Blood's enthusiasm for the subject carries over to her own work, The Weblog Handbook, which is not the do-it-yourself technique book you might expect. Instead, Blood takes on the role of mentor; she's been there and done that and has much wisdom to share. She is eager to convert readers into bloggers and offers good advice on finding one's voice, observing etiquette, and living online. Unfortunately, a lengthy afterword that focuses on the culture of weblogs seems a better fit for We've Got Blog. Appendixes offer a brief glimpse of creating a test weblog and working with links, but this book is written for someone who has flirted with the idea of starting a weblog and feels comfortable jumping right into the format. These titles are unique, as the publishing world is just catching up to the subject of weblogs. (Look for similar publications in the near future.) Both books are suited for public and academic libraries, but smaller public libraries might want to hold off to see whether a more practical do-it-yourself guide on blogging emerges. Nicely Done

Rebecca Blood's account of blogging, her story from the early days to the present, woven into a neatly structured account of what blogging is and how to go about it, is a pleasant read. The book is not technically deep nor philosophically profound, but well written and pitched at an appropriate level for the average starting web-logger.

One of the ways to measure the value of a book is to ask if the reading of it has changed the way one does things. The question is not so much "What did I learn?" but "What impact did this have on what I do?"

The answer, of course, is person bound; a book that has changed the way I behave may have no impact on someone else's actions. Rebecca Blood had a direct influence on my projects. For example, WikiDiction now has a space for linking to relevant quality blogs; added after finishing the chapter "Finding an Audience".

Makes me want to start my own weblog today!

I like Rebecca's Pocket and have been considering starting my own blog so I purchased this book. The best thing about this book is that Rebecca is obviously very enthusiastic aboout blogging, especially about what it can do for the confidence and writing abilities of the blogger. The book gives some practical questions potential bloggers need to ask themselves before starting a blog. The only reason this book isn't rated higher is that it is a little outdated - but it still has good information.

Did I end up starting a blog after reading a book? Not yet. I still haven't been able to answer for myself the question posed by Rebecca, "If you spend 8 hours + a day in front of the computer for work, are you willing to spend an additional few hours in front of a computer at home writing your blog?"

decent and wise counsel

Rebecca Blood loves her craft.

In a world moving as fast as the cyberworld is, a book written in 2002 and reviewed now in 2007 is bound to show its age. The Weblog Handbook does so.

Yet for sheer, innocent (but not inexpert), joyful description of a weblog community that discovered itself almost accidentally between 1999 and 2002, this delightful little book is both a period piece and a still-useful introduction to weblogging for novices.

Seven well-written chapters make the experience of reading this old-media production (ironies abound) a pleasure.

'What is a Weblog?' (chapter one, pp. 1-25) does what its title makes obvious. Along the way, the author utilizes her impeccably accessible prose to highlight the serendipitous, communal, and artistic-creative aspects of most blogs, or at least of those that set the movement afoot.

Blood's second chapter (her generous first-person style makes a reviewer who has never met her refer to her simply as 'Rebecca'; 'Why a Weblog?', pp. 27-37) dispenses wisdom regarding how the beast can take over the life of the beast-er. She indicates three motives for blogging: 'information sharing, reputation building, and personal expression', with careful attention to what the practice does for the writer as well as for the reader. The secret is to align what one already does with one's life as Daily Chronicler of Something.

Chapter three ('Creating and Maintaining Your Weblog', pp. 39-57) puts the 'p' in the first word of the author's subtitle. A newbie in the field will appreciate the absence of condescension as Blood introduces him to the nuts and bolts of his new hobby.

Every successful artist or otherwise public persona experiences that memorable moment when she understands who she is in her given role and why that is a natural place to be. According to Rebecca Blood, bloggers are no different (Chapter four, 'Finding Your Voice', pp. 59-76). Though she gives due attention to the blogger-audience dynamic from several angles, she is very much aware that a blogger who wants her craft to be an integral aspect of her life finds her voice (including the topic upon which she can write knowledgeably) and sticks with it.

Rebecca concludes 'Finding an Audience' (chapter five, pp. 77-99) with this judicious and provocative statement: 'If your objective in keeping a weblog is to gain a wide audience, I advise you to quite today. Webloggers who care about the size of their audience are always unhappy.'

By the time she has worked her way to that declaration, however, she has provided twenty pages of helpful guidance to, well, finding and building an audience. One gains the impression that here is a woman of balance, willing to help you do the thing you want to do but aware that it may turn out to be something other than that. Kudos to her for writing a professional manual that takes itself with appropriate levity.

Blood utilizes her sixth chapter to blend garden-variety journalistic ethics and etiquette with the peculiar idealism of the early weblogging community (chapter six, 'Weblog Community and Etiquette', pp. 101-125). Though she breaks her counsel into 'do not do' and 'do' categories, her approach is not rigid. Rather it is altruistic, idealistic, and communal. Even if those traits do not guarantee a better world, they are better than their alternatives. Blood capably guides the novice through the unspoken expectations that linger like minefields before the new weblogger who is clueless, belligerent, or some combination of the two. Reader beware.

Chapter seven ('Living Online', pp. 127-145), provides Blood with her clearest opportunity to disclose what the experience of doing what the title suggests has meant to this civil and entertaining author of 'Rebecca's Pocket'. As with so much of what she has written here, the basic principle is common sense, even if that uncommon virtue must now be applied to a recent and uncongealed new medium of public disclosure. Living online does not mean that the blogger or his friends, acquaintances, and even the defenseless objects of his drive-by observations do not preserve and need a private life. Blood offers sensible guidance for observing those limits and avoiding the unwelcome intrusions to which technology has added such unwelcome afterlife.

An afterword and several appendices complete a fine introduction to what in the hands of some must be regarded as a craft.

When entering theological seminary many years ago, I was urged to read Helmut Thielicke's A LITTLE EXERCISE FOR YOUNG THEOLOGIANS. That slim, heartfelt volume did not teach anyone how to be a good theologian, yet it punched above its weight by setting a course for decent progress by practitioners of a craft who would now be more aware of self and community than would have been the case had Thielicke kept his pen locked away.

Rebecca Blood's little book does the same for aspiring bloggers. Perhaps all that one has with which to repay her are five well-earned stars.

I just read the review by RAW, and I have all of the same Memories. I even wrote to Richard Prather when I was in my Junior year of High School 1959 and he wrote me back. My teacher thought it was advanced reading for a 16 yr old, but compared to todays books, it was NOTHING. My Mother was a Mystery reader, so I followed in her steps and am still reading them. I remember his Caddy and his Nude over his fireplace (Amanda I think?) Some Violence, no language that I can remember and nothing visual in the sex, just imagined. Fun and exciting. I read EVERY book that he wrote, and am going to read them all again. I just ordered 5 of them and have read 2 and laughed all the way through them. (in between the Hunger Games) Buy one and check him out, it's worth it. Carol

I was hoping I was buying a novel but I wasn't disappointed. Somehow Prather makes a short story feel like a novel. Up to the standards of Shell Scott fans.

Brought back many memories of my favorite detective over 50 years ago. Shell solved everything without a cell phone. I still remember his 42 Cadillac from other books. I'm sure Richard S. Prather would hate the Kindle I've used to re-read a few of his efforts. Hard to show over 25,000,000 sold on a digital reader.

Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings show the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas which lead to constructions, details, sculptures, and buildings.

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

This volume analyses how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Disappointing

Being a designer myself, I am very much interested in the thought process and preliminary drawings made by one of the great recent names in the field. I was definitely looking for inspirational drawings and to peer over the shoulder of a great in a similar field to see their process.

What I found instead was the disappointingly simple marks of a pretty amateur water colourist. I'm sure that this might be inspirational and interesting to people outside of visual arts and design, but compared to Arkitekture by Zaha Hadid, which has beautiful 3d renderings, models, pictures of her abstract scultptural work etc, it's woefully inadequate.

I won't be buying another book on his work without seeing it in the flesh and getting a good idea of what's really in there.

Caffyn Jesse teaches erotic massage to people from around the world in private retreats and small workshops at her studio on Salt Spring Island. She is a Certified Somatic Sex Educator with a Masters degree in Educational Studies and an Associate in Sex Education Certificate from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Human Sexuality. Full service guide on Erotic and Sensual massage

Amazing! Step by step guide on proper erotic massage techniques. The part I appreciate the most is the authors take on the importance of hygiene and cleanliness. Many other books I've read on sensual and erotic massage never mention how germs can be passed through cuts, scratches and abrasions. Everything should be cleaned before and after each client (bottles, stones, feathers, etc). Especially when giving someone an erotic or sensual massage its important to protect yourself from the spread of germs, bacteria and viruses on the skin or where bodily fluid may be release. The author also talks about anatomy, the joy of toys and even light BDSM in a way very understandable at any knowledge level. I can go on and on about this book. It is one I well appreciate and recommend to experienced and non-experienced massage enthusiasts.

Caffyn Jesse is one of the most profoundly gifted and learned Somatic Sex Educators of our time. Her vast terrain of knowledge from human physiology/anatomy to neurology, is voluminous while she also takes great care to attend to, invite and help cultivate the soulful and spiritual experiences of her clients. This book is not only a marvelous volume for those in the field of somatic sex education and hands-on erotic and educational practice but it's also a phenomenal resource for traditional body workers, traditional talk therapists and individuals and couples looking to increase their erotic intelligence and hands-on practices.

I recommend this book highly and am profoundly grateful for Caffyn Jesse's rigorous, compassionate and relentlessly ethical practice as a somatic sex educator and teacher.
