About the Author

Chapter 3
The Ten Most Commonly Used Five-Point PBA Circuits

Stimulating the psycho-bio-acupressure circuits rebalances our energy, allowing for self-treatment of a variety of emotional issues. Each circuit consists of five points, which, with the assistance of the following illustrations, we will learn how to locate on our body.

To stimulate the circuit, apply firm pressure to each of the five points, then, without pausing, apply pressure to each point a second and third time. The pressure should be firm but not painful. The objective is a simultaneous stimulation of the points, so we want the tissues to keep the memory of the pressure. In other words, even after you have stopped pressing on the five points, you (or the person you are treating) should feel the pressure lingering for a few moments. This is crucial: the pressure must be firm enough for the tissues to keep the memory of it. This is how a “printed circuit” is produced, allowing us to activate the desired energies.

Tips for Stimulating the Circuits

- If there’s one acupressure point that you have stopped feeling after you have finished stimulating the circuit, don’t hesitate to reapply pressure to it; you may want to apply pressure a little longer this time.

- Despite the accuracy of the sketches, you may not feel very confident when you begin. Don’t hesitate to feel around for the correct point; the points vary slightly from person to person. Place your thumb or index finger on the spot depicted in the illustration. (Your other fingers are not strong enough to stimulate the points.) While keeping your finger on the spot, apply deeper pressure a bit to the right and then a bit to the left, slightly above and then slightly below. Explore the area until you hit a sensitive zone: this is the point you want. When you have located the correct point, maintain firm, steady pressure for about five seconds.

- If you don’t find the sensitive zone, don’t worry--sensitivity varies from person to person. You can’t go too far wrong; the surface of your finger largely covers the area you want to target.

For readers who are familiar with acupuncture or shiatsu, each point will be given its identification number as indicated in the standard referencing system used by professionals.

Before you begin, remove your watch and any magnetic jewelry and empty your pockets of mobile phones, remotes, and the like, as these objects can interfere with the action of PBA.

Circuit Number 2
Against Negativity and Doubt

Negativity is easy to recognize: it is a state of mind where everything is perceived and experienced as negative and gloomy. Being affected by negativity does not mean being truly depressed, though negativity may well be a sign of depression if it lasts for too long.

Basically, being negative means invariably and exclusively seeing the negative side of events and people; it means feeling antagonized and criticized all the time as well as exasperated by everything around you; it means seeing the empty half of the glass in all things; and it means feeling separated from the rest of the world, which is experienced as hostile.

Systematic doubt is part of negativity: you start your day feeling that nothing is going to work, you have stopped believing in anything, and you have the impression that you are just wasting your time. You are unable to visualize a horizon that could be free from the feeling of separation and loss. You begin to distrust your usual ethical values and the system you used to believe in. If we let doubt invade all aspects of our life, we are obviously in a negative state of mind and possibly on our way to depression.

This circuit is extremely important, as it will be found in practically every protocol we’ll be studying a bit later (these protocols help us manage all the destructive emotions that weaken and destabilize us).

First Point: SP6 L (Left)
On the inside of the left ankle, locate the protuberance (the medial malleolus); proceed along the side of the tibia for about 5 centimeters, then press firmly on the posterior border of the bone; this point is often sensitive.

If you are working on yourself, place the little finger of your right hand exactly on the internal malleolus of your left ankle: the point will be situated just under your index finger. Make sure you press on the posterior border of the tibia and not upon its anterior border.

If you are working on someone else, place yourself on the left side of the patient and put the little finger of your left hand on his malleolus; the point will be right under your index finger.

Second Point: LI4 R (Right)
The second point is located between the first and second metacarpals, on the radial aspect of the middle of the second metacarpal bone, at the highest spot of the muscle when the thumb and index fingers are brought close together. Separate your thumb from your index finger and exert pressure right in the middle.

Third Point
(Special Point on the Right Foot)
This point is located between the extensor tendons of the third and fourth toes, about 2 centimeters from their base.

Fourth Point: LU7 L (Left)
This point is located 3 centimeters from the most distal skin crease of the wrist, proximal to the styloid of the radius in a depression between the tendons of brachioradialis and abductor pollicis longus. It is located a little above the left wrist crease in the spot where you feel your pulse.

Fifth Point: GV23
This point is located in the depression that corresponds to what remains of the anterior fontanel you had as a baby. Start at the hairline and make sure you follow the axis of the cranium; as soon as you feel the little depression, you know you are there. Look in a mirror to make sure you follow the sagittal line of your head.

Great energy restoration

Dr. Delatte has found a way to restore disturbed energy in just a few minutes each day. That energy work, combined with his golden rules is enough to keep stress and physical pain to a minimum. The book was interesting to read with all of the case studies and practical information. Also the explanation of doing the 5 point therapy is easy to follow. I've been doing circuits everyday and it really does make a difference in how my day goes! He spent 20 years learning and perfecting the method and it seems he has found a great way for people to help themselves and to ultimately to lessen their physical pain. I would definitely recommend this book!

A niche book for Oracle internals experts

This book is intended for Oracle internals experts who want a deep, deep drill down into the guts of Oracle to look for optimizations. It's well written and very in-depth, but you should have a look at the table of contents to make sure that you can get anything out of this book before you buy it. If you aren't the target audience then you are likely to get little or nothing out of it.

I want more books like this one!

I really don't know where I should begin writing this review to give the book a proper credit that it deserves. Hmm...FUN - I think that this word best describes this collection of essays (eleven prominent authors instead of more usual one or two, certainly helped a lot).

Can't remember when was the last time that I read technical book that kept me reading and reading, and reading - simply because all essays were *fun* to read. To be clear, yes I'm an Oracle geek, but I don't think you have to be an expert to understand 'the point' in the majority of the book, on contrary, if you're by any chance an Oracle newbie you have an opportunity to learn from the true experts (from their work done on the "projects from hell") and pick up some good habits and techniques to start your Oracle career (this book is not really about internals as much as it's about proper design and importance of understanding technology before using it - and using it to the full extent - you'll probably never again write DB agnostic applications, if this was your sin in the past :-).

So, being an expert or not, I'm sure you'll get the true 'message' from this book that will stick with you for the rest of your life (of course experts will enjoy reading it slightly more, they'll finally learn, what AFIEDT.BUF is really all about ;-).

A Painful, Funny Journey

I have 14 years of Oracle Experience with some of the busiest and largest transaction systems in the world. This book really hit home for me and brought back a lot of memories of painful times as well as gave me new insights. I have re-read this book twice since getting it amonth ago. It is that good.

The Tales of the Oaktable is a skeptic's work of technological history that is funny and hard to put down, but which also provides experienced database professionals roadmaps to solve their pressing problems ( or even see that they have a problem.)

The authors take an empirical, rational approach to diagnosing and discovering the most serious problems while providing amusing revelations about the people and organizations they have worked with. Along the way they lift Oracle's skirts and take us out back to show us the dirty laundry and other junk in Oracle's back yard. They provide methods to diagnose and reapir problems in oracle performance as well as enumerate the known pitfalls in project management and database design. Seasoned IT types will groan and laugh during these chapters.

They also look at larger architectural, economic, psychological, and philosophical issues which have a direct impact on databases and large information systems. Norgaard's history of computing is quite depressing. And I agree that many of the "new" blood wants to focus on .NET and J2EE - when the real heart and soul is still the data.

Oracle Insights DOES require both deep thought and deep, hard-won knowledge of Oracle in order to fully enjoy it. So, if at first you don't like it, then you don't know what you don't know.

An Okay Book

This comic was based on Who Wants to be a Superhero and saw Season 1 winner Feedback given his own comic book. The book tells the origin of Feedback and how he got his powers. The ensuing story is a tad convoluted and a little silly at times, but it's not unpleasant, and it has great artwork as well as a nice look at alternate covers for other heroes. Overall, an okay book if you're a fan of real life superheroes or the series that spawned the book.

About the Author
Vicki Stanfield, RHCE, has worked with Linux since 1994 and Unix since 1980. She has administered many varieties of Unix, VMS, as well as Slackware and Red Hat Linux.

Roderick W. Smith is a Linux networking expert and author of several books, including Linux Samba Server Administration and the Linux+ Study Guide, both from Sybex. Craig Hunt is a Linux expert who lectures regularly at major networking trade shows. He serves as author and series editor for the Craig Hunt Linux Library.

Well Written and Current

Linux System Administration does a great job of covering a vast amount of Linux topics with just the right amount of detail for most users. This book appeals to a wide variety of readers, it is written in way that doesn't scare off newbies, but manages to have enough meat for experienced Linux users. The great thing about this book is it spends a fair amount of time explaining how to do things on a variety of distros.
Parts of the book that stand out in my mind are the chapters dealing with kernel recompilation, scripting and security. The kernel recompilation chapter is by far the best material I've seen on the subject to date, it almost makes kernel recompilation sound too easy. The security chapter is good starting point for sysadmins that are new to Linux. The book also provides a nice little introduction to scripting, although if your going to be a Linux sysadmin, the Orielly books on bash and perl are a must.
There were very few things that I didn't like about this book. One thing that stands out in my mind is the author's insistence on using paper journal books for logging system changes. With the proper backup procedures in place, a web based system log is a much more efficient way of keeping tracking of changes. Overall, the book is must read for anyone new to Linux and is also a good pickup for seasoned Linux users. I've been recommending this book over Running Linux as of late, since the Oreilly offering is showing its age.

Is it worth the hype?

Well, I picked up second edition of the book "Linux System Administration" soon after I read excellent "introductory" type of the book, "Linux for Windows Administrators" by Mark Minasi. It was a logical next step for Unix/Linux newbie like me to pick up more advanced guide for Linux SA. Now, I can only confirm that the book is worth the Linux Journal award in 2001 as being "One of the most indispensable Linux Books".
It's well written, thought technical dry and less fun to read than the book from Mr. Minasi!
The impression that I got is that book is geared more toward novices and beginners in the field of system administration (in general) than for some seasoned Unix sysadmin on her/his way to Linux. (If you're Windows admin that successfully installed Linux box or two, with solid general knowledge of the hardware than this book is for you!)
Book is organized in four parts (Basics, Managing Users and Processes, Networking and System Optimization) and as such covers most tasks and duties of Linux SA.
Layout of the book is nothing special, it's simple and with some unnecessary screenshots (like that of xrost and BRU screenshot, webmin) and lengthy scripts (such as sample netfilter startup file) - this kind of material belongs to appendix of the book.
Overall good book that you can use on a daily basis but not as a complete reference! I found book useful as a reminder of some basic principles and commands, which I later explore with the help of other books and online documentation. Have fun!

True Linux System Administration

One of my Unix lab professors once said that Unix was so vast that one lifetime is not enough to really get to master all aspects of it. After reading several Unix/Linux books, this operating system still remained somewhat of a mystery.
Thanks to the authors of this book, I can really say that I'm well on my way to a decent level of proficiency. No question, this book is of the highest quality. The material is presented and explained in such a way, you get a sense that the authors truly possess a profound understanding of the SA and Linux fields. The book tries to be distribution neutral by covering Redhat linux (vesion 6 to 7) and dishing out to other distributions (especially Debian) when things are done differently.
Unlike other books that are recipe oriented or adaptations of technical documents, this is a true SA book because it helps you gain control of your Linux system.
