Charting Miller’s cultivation of his esoteric ideas from boyhood and adolescence to later in his career, Calonne examines how Miller remained deeply engaged with a variety of philosophies, from astrology and Gnosticism to Eastern thinkers. Calonne describes not only the effects this had on Miller’s work, but also to his complex and volatile life—his marriages and love affairs with Beatrice Wickens, June Mansfield, and Anaïs Nin; his years in Paris; and the journey to Greece that resulted in the travelogue The Colossus of Maroussi, the book Miller considered to be his greatest work. After discussing Miller’s final residences in Big Sur and the Pacific Palisades in California, Calonne considers the author’s involvement in the arts, love of painting and music, and friendships with a number of classical musicians. Miller, Calonne reveals, was a quirky, charismatic man of genius who continues to influence popular culture today.

I think it's very disturbing that this book "erases" the contribution of some of the most important Miller scholarship of the last fifteen years. Notably my own! It's a pity editors are not familiar enough with the subjects they sign up books on to even notice.

Great Read - similar in style to a John McPhee book

Similar in style to a John McPhee book, Match Day is a welcome read for anyone who enjoys journalistic narratives intertwined with non-fiction character development and storylines. Eule successfully interweaves and juxtaposes factual and historical information about the "Match" against its ramifications on the lives of three central characters and their loved ones. The three young female doctors preparing for their transition from medical school into residency present a nice cross-section of the challenges facing women going through the Match. These include balancing career, family, and love. While the lives of young doctors have been pretty well described in the public forum by now, it is to Eule's credit that the storylines maintain their narrative impact as both telling and engaging. In part, I think this is due to Eule's personal investment in the project (his then girlfriend and now wife is one of the characters), and his writing style which effectively transitions between personal storytelling and more traditional journalistic narratives thoughout the book. The results are an informative book interspersed with touching vignettes of how life continues in the face of a challenging career.

In addition, his focus on the unique challenges facing women who wish to become doctors also adds a welcome depth of understanding. I definitely recommend this book for those who like good storytelling and character-driven nonfiction, and I hope that a follow-up book to "Match Day" is forthcoming in a few years. I would love to hear more about where these three successful and talented women end up to see how much the Match, and medicine, have affected the course of their lives.

Could NOT put it down! A great read.

Beautiful and touching, could not put it down.

Learning about the lives of young people in the medical field always interest me but this author gets behind the scenes, into the feelings and motivations of three female medical interns, especially around that complex "match day". A journalist, rather than a doctor, following these lives gives us an extraordinary viewpoint particularly concerning the effects of impossibly long hours, strains on relationships and families, and the incredible commitment to medicine it takes to succeed and become a "healer".

Good read and welcomed update on the subject

Although much has been written about interns and residents experiences, this is a welcomed addition and an update (it talks about Match 2006) to this genre. It briefly discusses the serious issues and hard choices women med students/doctors face trying to have both a professional and a personal life. This part alone makes it a required read for partners of women doctors.
I gave it only 4 starts because to me it read like a long newspaper article with too much focus, at times, on the residents' work schedule/hours - a controversial issue covered in depth in professional and academic journals. Overall, a noteworthy effort that I really appreciate.

About the TRUE meaning of Christmas!

When I bought the Wiggly Wiggly Christmas DVD last year for my boys, I was pleasantly surprised to hear songs about Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas. My 2 year old asked for a Wiggles Book for Christmas so I ordered this one. It just came and it's wonderful! The first few pages tell about the birth of Jesus and why we celebrate Christmas, why we have Christmas trees, etc. Then it goes on to give lyrics and sheet music for Christmas songs. Each song is followed by a craft activity for parents to do with their children. And the crafts will be easy enough to do with my 2 & 3 year old boys and probably would entertain older children too. I highly recommend this!

A very nice book, complete with sheet music for Wiggles Christmas songs like "Go, Santa, Go" and "Let's Clap Hands for Santa Claus", it includes activity ideas and instructions for making stockings and other Christmas projects. Excellent for parents to use with younger children, or for kids maybe 6 and older to use by themselves.

This collection of 18 songs [with not only guitar chords but written music as well] and 18 Christmas activities is an over-sized book [11 x 8.5]. The left side of the page shows the song with music and the right side of each page has an activity the child can enjoy. Each activity has addition ideas. For example, MAKE REINDEER ANTLERS by drawing around your child's hands, cutting from brown paper. and then gluing antlers onto a headband for your child to wear. The additional activity idea is to make Reindeer Footprints. The page for making five different drums went with the song, LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. Any elementary teacher would be inspired with all the ideas presented here.
