dont waste your time on this book its has no plot

I dont think this author knows what it like being in love and have someone you love have problems. Because the main protagonist just gives up on her GF, I was hoping the book was more about the lesbian coupls and them fighting to keep there relationship going in a new place instead it was more on the stupid tunnels and shaken head.

funny, heartbreaking look at navigating first love and loss

This book is a clear-eyed, funny, heartbreaking look at navigating first love and loss. Thank you to the author for placing a lesbian couple front and center in a young adult novel. The boarding school details are spot on, and each character is portrayed with humanity. With respect to the sensibilities of an earlier commenter, the stolen kiss scene is handled beautifully and has nothing to do with "assault." It's more about the bewildering and confounding time in a young person's life when being attracted to the wrong person is terribly painful and marked by wrong moves and yearning and clumsy apologies-- in other words, adolescence. Don't let the themes scare you off-- this is a fast-paced and fun read that packs an emotional punch.

Wonderful YA Debut!

Without Annette is a fresh coming-of-age story that explores that super-charged moment in time when we leave the things that have thus far defined us (family, home town, high-school) and start to come up with our own definitions. Josie's moment is extra complicated by the fact that she's stepped into a world of rigid definitions (boarding school) and she's brought her struggling girlfriend along with her. The boarding school setting, honest characters, and reckless behavior kept me turning pages. The truths about discovering who you are and the impossibility of saving other people were thoughtfully told and left me satisfied. A great read.

Grade 4 Up-The experiences of 15 children who survived the Holocaust in hiding are presented here within the historical context of the Nazi rise to power and World War II. These youngsters were sheltered in a variety of private homes and institutions by "righteous Gentiles," family friends, and those simply looking for additional money; some were resented, some treated compassionately, and others mistreated and abused physically. Greenfeld has interviewed these survivors, who are now living in the U.S., and has recorded their memories. Both the mundane and the unusual are remembered; the most commonly described feelings are the fear that family members would perish and the sense of guilt at having survived while others did not. There are reminiscences of narrow escapes and poignant remembered pleasures of edible treats. While the chronological arrangement of the book makes it difficult to follow a specific child's story (it is possible by using the excellent index), it succeeds admirably in allowing readers to place the experiences described within the framework of the Holocaust. An excellent selection of black-and-white photographs and an open design contribute to making this an important and accessible resource.

Greenfeld has spoken to survivors now living in the U.S., and he weaves pieces of their painful personal narratives with a general account of what it was like to be a Jewish child at that time. Like Anne Frank, many were hidden by Righteous Gentiles, who often risked their own lives. Like the children in Vos' Hide and Seek (1991) and Anna Is Still Here (1993), they had to lie, to be always on guard. The individual voices are intense and quiet. They speak of hunger, cold, terror, and loneliness. They remember suddenly being ashamed of themselves. Boys had to hide that they were circumcised. These children witnessed courage and also horror, such as the father who had to strangle his screaming baby to save the others in hiding. They're honest about their difficult readjustment after the war ("My mother was in such bad shape . . . she had no teethÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20I couldn't stand being near her"). They will always feel guilty for having survived while others died. The slightly oversize book, printed on a fine vellum stock, is artistically designed, with clear type and wide margins, and the personal narratives are set off in italics, with occasional small black-and-white family snapshots that frame moments of ordinary life. A Moving Account

I just finished another book about the Holocaust that mentioned children being smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in backpacks and I wanted to hear more stories about how children survived the Holocaust.

This book is considered juvenile non-fiction but the information is the same regardless of the reader's age. Howard Greenfeld does a very good job organizing the stories of children who were hidden during the Holocaust. He includes their stories in their own words as well as photographs of the survivors.

A moving collection regardless of the reader's age.

A must read book.

I bought this book for my son, Jefferson, who is 9 years old. When I looked through it, I started reading it, and just couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful book, of hardships like we have never known before, and survival of a wonderful religion and people. We are not Jewish, but I enjoyed this book immensely, and will be reading other books by this author. This book is great for adults, really makes one appreciate all that we have in this country; freedom first and foremost. For children, it is a great book to teach about hardships and compassion for others, as well as understanding history and the second world war. A DEFINITE 5 stars from me.

yipee, a book on trailing rather than tracking

Which dogs are best qualified for man-trailing, and how to teach it to them and put it into practice, is explained in this book. In this book: What is man-trailing? Which dog is best suited? Practical equipment. How the dog is trained. What the dog's behavior tells you. Christiane Liebeck was one of the first people in Germany to train her dogs for man-trailing, and to educate interested teams in this field. She has written this book with the aid of Robin and Kevin Kocher from the United States, both experienced man-trailers.

Good Book But Not For Everyone

I was overjoyed to find this book and find it to be useful and also fill a rare and unique niche. That said, this book is definitely not for everyone. And I suspect that most people will be disappointed in this book because they expect it to be something that it isn't.
--This is not a book about Bloodhounds or training Bloodhounds despite the title. If that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere (the book "Red Dog Rising" about Ronin the legendary trailer is far more interesting and revealing about Bloodhounds as trailers and doing police work).
--This book is written by a non-native English speaker and it shows. For instance, one chapter is titled "For Whom is Man Trailing Interesting?". So the language and syntax is going to throw some people off. That said, the book is written clearly and coherently. But it will read like a conversation with a European who speaks clear and exact English but doesn't have the idioms down and sometimes phrases statements in ways that clearly scream "I"m not from the USA." So if that bugs you, you will continually be distracted by the book. And if that's not an issue for you, be assured that this is a very coherent and clear book that reads easily other than the syntax issue I pointed out.
--This is an intro book. It is not designed to provide a personal history and storyline (ala "Red Dog Rising"). It doesn't provide a wealth of practical training details and troubleshooting (like what to do if you have a high prey drive dog that gets distracted by wildlife scents, or there is nothing on "snake-proofing" your dog which is an issue for trailing in most parts of the US during warm weather months). I could go on with other examples but the point is, the book isn't intended to cover all of those details so don't expect to pick it up as a veteran trailer and see answers to that sticky issue you haven't been able to resolve with your dog.
--This is not a "I can learn to trail with just this book--don't need any training or classes or mentoring--this book alone will do" resource. This book reads like a good resource to get you started, or as a quick checklist the first time you go out trailing (b/c as obvious as it is that you should bring water, you'd be surprised how likely it is that on your first call you show up and are having to bogart water off of someone else.) Or forgetting to pack high-value treats. This is like a job aid--some of the advice is obvious but still essential and easy for people to forget b/c they don't have a routine down. Besides, anyone who is expecting one book to provide all of the answers (or even most of the answers) on trailing is naive.
--Police officers and K9 handlers who are specifically looking for a book geared to criminal justice and trailing potential suspects or victims or witnesses will be disappointed by this book b/c it's not very specific to those scenarios.

Now that I've talked about what this book isn't or who shouldn't get it, let me talk about the pros and target audience. I like that this book distinguishes between trailing and tracking. It's only recently that we've had literature that makes this critical distinction. If you don't know what that means, the quick explanation is that tracking involves a head-down, following tracks on the ground. This is traditionally how dogs were trained to find or follow targets. This approach breaks down when the tracks go to areas (like stone or cement) that don't leave tracks well and can get hosed down in a city (so the scent pool isn't on the track), or the track is old (and the scent pool is really more in the air or other objects) or if the personal/animal leaves the ground (gets in a car, is picked up by someone else, climbs a tree) or the track gets contaminated (someone begins walking on top of the same footsteps). Trailing involves following the scent of the target (and that scent may be strongest off the ground b/c of how scent pools work). It's very difficult to train a dog to track and then train them to trail well. You don't train tracking the same way you train trailing. So this distinction is a critical one and this book makes it--it is aimed at trailing.

This is a great intro book, if you're just getting started with trailing or are thinking of getting started with training. It will give you a clear understanding of what you're getting into, key concepts, how to approach it, and if you and your partner are a decent fit for trailing. This is also a great book if you're taking training on trailing or have an experienced handler you're working with b/c it will augment what you're getting in person, give you ideas of questions to ask your instructor/mentor, and also provide structure to what is sometimes a very "just follow me and do what I do and I'll occasionally give you some hints or interesting stories" approach by many canine trainers. And as I mentioned earlier, it provides a good job/set of reminders if you're a new K9 handler who hasn't done much trailing.

This book was a great read I didn't put it down at all, and it was so in depth and easy to understand for a beginner. I think a must for any scent hound owner for an understanding of their pets abilities and nature.

recommended mandatory reading for every human being

this is a unique,thorough. and entertaining-yet-serious description of how we should all treat others..... NOT an instruction book, nor a book of rules.....simply how to show respect to our fellow human beings. The hardback edition is much easier on the eyes than the softcover/paperback edition.

Short and sweet. For anyone who loves to get a hand-written thank you note, a birthday card in the mail, or the perfect gift just because-this book is for you. Donald McCullough first is a magical writter, and second a wise and kind teacher.
We need to get back to the nature of caring and doing the little things that make human life special. Saying please and thank you are such fundimental human feelings, the loss of these words in our language will no doubt be the loss of the very threads that help to create the weaving which is the nicer side of our human family.
The gift for all ocassions (I purchased 20 of them!) and a great place to start with the kids. Help us keep the sweetness of human kindness alive, read and enjoy "Say Please, Say Thank You...!

You said it!

I wish I could drop millions of copies of this book from the sky. It should be required reading by every human being. Has the author been on Oprah? Larry King? Good Morning America? Today? Rosie? How about a PBS special? If so, I'm sorry I missed those segments. If not, then where's his publicist? Can we get rid of Dr. Laura and replace her with Donald McCullough?
It would be such a lovely world if we were all to get back to the basics of mutual respect and consideration. There would be a lot less stress in today's world if everyone followed the very simple principles in this book.
Buy it, read it, share it, and most importantly, DO IT. You'll stand out among the herd--that's for sure.

poor in terms of material - just plain roleplay ideas

The reason I gave a 2-star rating is that the material is really poor. The author introduces some roleplay ideas, but there is no supportive material. My students cannot perform the roleplay without any vocabulary knowledge or any guidance of how they can use the language needed. The first and most important part of communication classes is to present the topic and guide them before they can actually talk to each other. This book completely lacks this material. Definitely isn't worth the money.

Communicative and Performance Based Learning

What a wonderful resource for teachers wanting to incorporate communicative learning and teaching into their own pedagogy. The role-play situations included in the book are presented through real-world contexts and allow students to creatively incorporate their own back ground knowledge of the given topics and portray the situations through their own cultural lens. Doing so allows the situations in the book to share and teach different cultural perspectives about the various provocative topics.

Detailed lesson plans and accompanying supplemental material are included with each situation and teachers need only to minimally modify to meet the needs of the different proficiency levels of their classes. This is A MUST resource to add to any teachers' repertoire to foster engaging and meaningful speaking and learning experiences!

This book is a great resource for any teacher! There is a wide array of role plays to choose from, and the best part is their adaptability. You can include specific grammar or other areas of focus (giving advice, expressing opinions, etc.) for a class very easily. I also like the discussion questions given after each role play. You can use some of the discussion questions to generate warm up responses at the beginning of a class or just use them (as recommended in the book) as a follow up activity. Having enough material to pick and choose from as well as pre-prepped really fun and adaptable activities is a major bonus. This book is awesome!
