A Classic Finance Text!

Foundations of Finance, though long out of print and nearly impossible to find, is a superbly readable introduction to the theory of finance. Though somewhat dated by the work that Fama and other economists have done in the past 25 years, this book covers a lot of ground in great detail.
You can indeed purchase a a photocopied version at the University of Chicago bookstore(Fama uses it as required reading in B432, the finance course he teaches).

° Les différents sens du mot sont clairement numérotés et présentés dans un ordre allant du sens le plus courant aux sens plus particuliers.

° Pour chaque sens, des synonymes et des contraires permettent à l'enfant d'enrichir son vocabulaire et, en fin d'article, des renvois analogiques (signalés par une flèche) l'invitent à consulter d'autres mots du même domaine.

° Les expressions et locutions, écrites en caractère gras, sont faciles à repérer.

° Les verbes sont accompagnés d'un renvoi systématique aux tableaux de conjugaison (pp. 1057-1072).

° En fin d'article, des remarques (précédées d'une puce rouge) signalent les difficultés de langue (orthographe, prononciation, pluriels particuliers, homonyme ou paronyme à ne pas confondre...) ou apportent des compléments de vocabulaire, comme le cri et le nom du petit pour les animaux, le nom des musiciens pour les instruments de musique... Ces remarques incluent systématiquement les recommandations de la réforme de l'orthographe de 1990 (voir La nouvelle orthographe pp. IX-X).

If you are in education--on either side of the desk, you will enjoy this old charmer. You will laugh at the longest bar in the world, Tequila Daisies, and all the notions they inspire about how education worked in the VERY old caveman days.

Teaching What matters

When I found this book on my list of items to read for a graduate course, I did not believe the reviews that stated a 70 year old book could still provide enlightenment on todays' issues. Coming into the education field with a background in business, I found myself not only laughing throughout parts of the book but agreeing with the author. This book brought education and business together for me.

The author is correct, today we spend too much time focusing on what worked yesterday and not wanting to change. As a result, we make excuses on why what was still could be the answer. We are all realizing that yesterday's education is no longer effective for tomorrow's students. This book is one every stakeholder should read before voting on the latest "get fixed-quick" plans for education are initiated. While this book does not offer any suggestions on how to fix the system, it does offer an interesting viewpoint on how everything went so wrong. The question thus becomes who can come up with an answer to the questions this book poses.
