Kick Start Your Thinking

I have always considered a "good book" as one that kick starts my thinking or causes me to wrestle with an issue inside my mind. "Kingdom, Power & Glory" is one of those books. When I got to the chapter regarding the Gizrah in the Ezekiel Temple layout, I immediately did some cross-referencing and research while combing down the hair in the back of my neck. I then had to sit back and exclaim, "Wow." This then sparked a debate within my head regarding the ramifications and possibilities of what the Millennium is truly all about as well as the vast difference between Justification and Sanctification.
One thing to remember when purchasing this book. Nancy Missler jumps into the subject matter like a racehorse out of the starting gate. Be ready to jump into the deep end first. Keep your Bible open and handy--you're going to need it! (Acts 17:11 applies more than ever)

Please take my word for it... This book is a MUST have. Go to the Missler's website [...] and order the updated version of this book NOW NOW NOW! (this is not the updated version, only at Missler's website can you find it as of now) Man oh man, all these years I had been living in confusion and bewilderment because what I was reading in the Bible and understanding through the guidance of the Holy Spirit wasn't quite lining up with what I was hearing preached at me on Sunday mornings... Now I know why! Most of the church teachers these days got it a bit off kilter... They don't fully understand the parables of Jesus... They don't understand some of the things Jesus was saying nor some of the things being written by Paul... The Missler's got it right in this book. Man, this book will set you free... I read it twice and let me tell you man, it was like having a born again experience all over again. I'm like wow! How wonderful the knowledge is that this book hit me with... It hit me with some knowledge man! Wow and I thank God for that! I've been telling everybody that I can about this book...

Dear people please... Understand this. If you put your faith and hope in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, believing in Him for salvation... YOU'RE SAVED MAN! Don't let anyone tell you ANYTHING different. Being saved by Jesus is like being entered into that race Paul was talking about. Your entry fee has been purchased.. YOU'RE IN! Now go run that race to win the top prize. Now just because you lose the race, just because you totally mess up and go off course, doesn't mean you never entered the race! (and what does entering the race man? It means you are saved, only SAVED people run in this race). People who don't believe in Jesus are never entered in this race. When Paul speaks of being disqualified... he's not talking about losing salvation, he's talking about being disqualified from winning the prizes that are there to be won by those who are in the race, those who are already saved.

Ok, I could go on and on.. But this book explains it all and more. It's got like charts and stuff.. you know, parable charts and other kinds of charts showing how we ought to live a life that sanctifies us... That's it man! Right, today's pulpit messages seem to confuse Justification with Sactification.. at least, they cause the two to overlap somewhat... Justification comes ONLY through faith in Jesus Christ, for He alone justifies us. Sanctification comes after we have been justified already by Jesus. Sanctification is what will win us the prizes in Heaven (Inheriting the Kingdom, not just entering it as all believers will) So you see, it's about doing good works through the spirit of God... not the flesh. Denying ourselves, taking up our cross as the Bible says and dying to self... NOT so that we can be justified in our faith... But so that we can be sanctified and qualified to INHERIT the Kingdom of God, and not just enter it as a bum! As it stands I'm gonna enter the Kingdom of God wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked... I aim to change that. I aim now for the prize and run the race anew... So can you! These are the good things that our Lord Jesus wants for us.

Get this book! I thank God for Chuck & Nancy Missler and the books that they write! THANKS GOD! (Spoken while pointing both index fingers toward the Heavens!).

Mindset in Motion

Jan Koum and Brian Acton are the founders of WhatsApp, the world’s most famous messaging app. Its mission is to “empower people through technology and communication, no matter who they are, or where they live.”

Their remarkable journey is a hallmark of courage, willpower, and relentless determination. In a Guardian newspaper interview, Acton describes the relationship as “yin and yang.” He says, “I’m the naïve optimist, he’s more paranoid. I pay attention to bills and taxes, he [Koum] pays attention to our product.”

Koum was born in a rural village outside of Kiev, Ukraine. At the age of sixteen, during much political strife and instability, his family made the agonizing decision to flee their country and move to Mountain View, California. Koum’s father could not join them and was left behind. Koum told one interviewer, “I grew up in a society where everything you did was eavesdropped on, recorded, snitched on.” Koum’s difficult childhood experience under Soviet surveillance inspired the WhatsApp messaging service.

Koum and Acton are no strangers to failure and rejection. In summer 2009, Acton was looking for a job. For more than eleven years, the Stanford computer science graduate had been working at Yahoo, the social networking business, in various engineering roles.

Facebook turned me down. It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life’s next adventure.

Whatever you choose to believe, life is anything but predictable. Just five years later, in a miraculous twist of fate, Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion.

To put the deal in perspective, at the time of purchase, the hotel chain Marriott International had over 120,000 staff, a twenty-two-year history, and a market cap of over $15.4 billion. WhatsApp has only fifty-five employees, although I hear they are hiring.

How did this unlikely pair become two of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet? The answer: They had harnessed the leader’s mindset.

10X Thinking

Astro Teller is a British entrepreneur, scientist, and thinker who is widely credited as one of the pioneers of 10X thinking (10X). He heads up Google X, a futuristic lab responsible for hyper-ambitious projects such as Google Glass, balloon-powered Wi-Fi networks, and the infamous Google self-driving car. According to legend, his business card describes him as “Captain of Moon Shots.”

His story inspired me to embark on a journey to unlock the anatomy of a leader’s mindset at many of the world’s most exciting organizations, from young startups to global giants.

Along the way, I uncovered some surprising insights about how the smartest leaders, teams, and entrepreneurs think and what they do to inspire change and move forward. In an interview with Wired magazine, Teller explains the power of 10X thinking: “There are tests that you can apply to see if you’re thinking big enough. The easiest one, the mantra that we use at Google X, is ten times rather than ten percent better, you tend to work from where you are: if I ask you to make a car that goes 50 miles a gallon, you can just retool the engine you already have. But if I tell you it has to run on a gallon of gas for 500 miles, you’re going to have to start over. That causes you to approach the problem so differently that weirdly, counter-intuitively, it’s often easier to make something ten times better--because perspective-shifting is just that much more powerful than hard work and resources being thrown at problems via traditional, well-tried paths.”

We further show that putting a Conceptual Model at the center of the design and development process can pay rich dividends: designs that are simpler and mesh better with users' tasks, avoidance of unnecessary features, easier documentation, faster development, improved customer uptake, and decreased need for training and customer support.

A welcome addition to the body of rigorous thinking, planning and documentation design teams bring to advanced development

"Conceptual Models" came highly recommended by Hugh Dubberly, and I wasn't disappointed. Henderson & Johnson offer a comprehensive user-centered approach to describing in plain language the objectives, components, operations and attributes of any given product or service application. No small thing. Getting clear on the underlying concepts and their relationships can be hard indeed, muddied by all manner of technical jargon, legacy thinking and marketing rhetoric. I lead teams on some of the more complex web-based enterprise software out there, and this book provides a valuable general template for making sophisticated offerings easier to understand, build, sell and use. Remember when the reporting language of interaction designers consisted of mostly of a few use-cases, an information architecture, a set of user interface controls and screen designs? "Conceptual Models" practically extends the influence of good human-centered design-thinking across what is otherwise a fairly narrow technical development arena. Excellent book on an overlooked aspect of design

As a UX Designer working on software applications, this book is an excellent resource on how to approach the larger problem.
Oftentimes I find myself reading requirements, and my first instinct is to envision screens, and the relevant components.

This book has really me helped to step back, look at the related parts, and start to assemble a coherent model. By doing so, it's helped me to pare back the UI, and provide a coherent narrative for the user... Highly recommended, especially for UX people coming from the design side of things.

I went to go see Jeff and Austin talk for an hour on the contents of this book in Feb, 2013. It was amazing. I'm finally buying this book today. The talk was great for psychologically minded people, designers, and concept-minded problem-solvers. I know this field will get even bigger in the future. I currently work as a webdesign consultant/analyst. This will be extremely helpful for me. I highly recommend hiring Jeff and Austin to come speak at your business if you do anything software related. If I were to chose between reading this book and taking a class in User Experience, I would chose this book. You can also get a pdf version of book for slightly less through the publishers website.
