Reader stay a moment! A word before you read the following pages, because you-if you are not an octogenerian-never heard John Jasper in his pulpit.

No doubt, you have heard about him, and particularly the most celebrated of his sermons, but the chances are you never read a line that he "preached", and yet his reputation was as wide as that of the late "Justice John" (The Virginia Judge) who followed Jasper by nearly a generation.

Jasper, like most celebrities, was one of a class without successors, excpet the innumerable Negro ministers tried without success to affect his ways. Raised in bondage during the ante bellum days, unlettered and ungrammatical, the son of Africa never lost-not to his dying day-the manners and tastes of the old South.

On the pulpit, the Reverend gave an exhibition in a torrent of language that has never been equalled. His gestures were beyond description while circling the pulpit-laughing, singing, shouting and crying. In spite of these irreverent actions, he was puring out to a spellbound congregation a red hot sermon, full of love, tenderness, tears and bitterness. Jasper embodied the hearts, the minds and the emotions of those who heard him but once. And thus, in later life, he became a sensation as a national lecturer.

His celebrated sermon "De Sun Do Move" was a scientific absurdity, but Jasper summoned his Bible as witness that the earth was flat and that the sun rotated. To drive home his point and to substantiate his sermon he ransacked the Good Book, plucking passages as he found them, and literally proved his position. His love of the Bible, his pure honesty, his devout faith and unyielding courage drew to him the respect and admiration of thousands. Few ever left the pews of the Sixth Mount Zion Church in Richmind who were not wholly or partially convinced-even the skeptics-that perhaps "Reverend Jasper had something."

And the Reverend did "have something"-even if in a modest degree that something is now perpetuated in book form-the most popular of his sermons "De Sun Do Move."

About the Author
John J. Jasper was born a slave on July 4, 1812 on Peachy Plantation in Fluvanna County, Virginia, the yougest of 24 children. His father, a preacher had prophesied that his last child would become a great minister. Jasper was converted to Christianity and secretly learned to read. He studied the Bible and was soon preaching the Sciptures. In 1867 Jasper joined 10 friends to create the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. Reverend Jasper preached De Sun Do Move more than 250 times, including one before the Virginia General Assembly. It is known that Jasper married four times and fathered at least seven children with his second wife. He sadly passed away on March 28, 1901, at age 89.

It also explores low copy number DNA typing, mixtures, and quality assurance and control.

The second section examines the collection and preservation of biological evidence under a variety of different circumstances and the identification of human remains—including in mass disaster settings. It discusses applications to bioterrorism investigations, animal DNA testing in criminal cases, pedigree questions and wildlife forensic problems, applications in forensic entomology, and forensic botany.

The third section explores recent developments and new technologies, including the rigorous identification of tissue of origin, mtDNA profiling using immobilized probe strips, chips and next-generation sequencing, the use of SNPs to ascertain phenotypic characteristics, and the "molecular autopsy" that looks at aspects of toxicogenetics and pharmacogenetics.

The book concludes with a discussion on law, ethics, and policy. It examines the use of DNA evidence in the criminal justice system in both the United States and Europe, ethical issues

in forensic laboratory practices, familial searches, DNA databases, ancestry searches, physical phenotyping, and report writing. The contributors also examine DNA applications in immigration and human trafficking cases and international perspectives on DNA databases.

About the Author

Dragan Primorac, M.D., Ph.D., is a pediatrician, forensic expert, and geneticist. Currently he serves as an adjunct professor at Eberly College of Science, The Pennsylvania State University, and The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, University of New Haven in the United States and at Medical Schools in Split and Osijek in Croatia. Professor Primorac is a pioneer in the application of DNA analysis for identification of bodies in mass graves. He authored close to 200 scientific papers, book chapters, and abstracts in areas of forensic science, clinical medicine, molecular genetics, population genetics, genetic legacy of homo sapiens, education, science, and technology policy.

Moses S. Schanfield, Ph.D., has undergraduate and master’s degrees in anthropology and a PhD degree in human genetics. He has been involved full time in forensic testing for 30 years. Professor Schanfield has been involved in the development of some of the critical functions of modern forensic DNA testing including the in-lane size ladder, which is used in all human identification testing. He has published extensively on forensic DNA testing and has testified in state, federal, and military courts in the United States and Canada, Puerto Rico, and Barbados.

Anyway it is a basic and short read that will be great as a step-up book

I remember reading one of the Cam Jansen books when I was younger but I cannot put my finger on it. More than likely it was this one but again my memory won't place it.

Anyway it is a basic and short read that will be great as a step-up book. There are a few words that may end up causing problems but with the dinosaur names at least there is a pronunciation guide for those who don't know them. Otherwise word-wise there shouldn't be much other problems.

There isn't much of a plot or background to the story. Basically point A, point B and point C then The End. Since of the hurried plot you don't get much mystery to work with or even truly much of a motive.

What really irritated me with this book was the characters. Cam is the annoying know-it-all that seems to bounce around. She has this amazing photographic memory and gets in trouble but not enough trouble that it really stops her from getting down what she needs to. Her best friend is the typical follow-along type who complains and doesn't want to but then still gets dragged in since he chooses to be loyal.

Definitely a quick read for many....

Repetitive, redundant, and tends to repeat itself

I enjoyed the five books in the original Blending series, and so I looked forward to their continuation. And while I did keep turning the pages on this one, I found the dialog incredibly irritating.
Almost the entire story is told via conversation. And the dialog is so mannered, awkward and formal - even when it is mere agreement. For example:
"Let's also say that your violence would have mine to keep it company."
This book could've been one third its final length if she'd written "Agreed." once in a while. But instead she has one member of the Blending state an idea, then has a short paragraph for _every_ other member to make a statement agreeing with it. She does this with other conversations as well, but mercifully, those tend to have fewer people in the room.
The obsession with tea and (for the women) bathing also gets old.
All of the bad guys are pretty much the same character divided into different bodies, which can make them a bit hard to keep track of. However, it is still entertaining to watch their downfall.
The world Ms. Green has built here is really interesting, but this particular novel doesn't really do it justice. Still, it is readable, and Book Two in the Blending Enthroned series is a bit better, so it may be worth reading this one. However, my best recommendation is to stop with Book 5 of the original Blending series.

Mediocrity at its finest

This book starts out where the last series left off, with good plot ideas but put together in a horrible fashion. The books in this series are page turners some say, and they are, but the only reason being what could be said in one book alone, is chopped into pieces and printed as seperate 'books'. You have to buy the next book in the series just to see what should have happenned in the one before.
All that aside, the characters are easily liked. Six main characters covering almost every personality type you could think of; you're bound to find one you can identify with. Too bad they all any sort of depth. The overall direction of the story is good, but it breaks down in alot of areas. For one, the author can't seem to break her ties from romance writing; everyone has to sleep with everyone else to maintain their magical 'strength'. Secondly, our main characters are infallible when it comes to their actions outside of their group; they're always right, and the 'other' protagonists or antagonists are always wrong.
Overall, I'm sure when all the books are written, and you read them all as if they were one book, it will be a good story. But if you don't mind choking down a mediocre book until that point, grab this and read it.

New Blending Book

I enjoyed this book but one thing that annoyed me was the fact that it introduced a lot of new characters, some of which seemed to have no relevance to the story. Hopefully now that Ms. Green is finished with the introductions the next book will move much faster and tie all the story lines together. One note for new readers: if you haven't read the the blending series before this do so, because you will be completly lost without it. Besides that the book got really interesting at the end, complete with a traditional cliff hanger ending. I can't wait for the next one!

This award is the most prestigious award conferred by the Society for the Study of Reproduction. Each year, this award recognizes an exemplary research career in reproductive biology. The 2013 recipient of the Carl G. Hartman Award is Michael D. Griswold, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael D. Griswold, Regents Professor of Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University (WSU), is world-renowned for his contributions to our understanding of Sertoli cell structure and functions and the crucial role of Vitamin A in spermatogenesis and a loyal member of SSR. Mike received a B.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wyoming. He conducted postdoctoral studies with Dr. Philip Cohen at the University of Wisconsin, funded by an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship, working on amphibian metampophosis, and with Dr. Flauco P. Tocchini-Valentini in Rome, funded by an EMBO Fellowship, on Xenopus RNA. Mike spent a year as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He then spent two years as a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Irving Fritz at the University of Toronto, where he acquired what would become a life-long interest in Sertoli cells. Mike joined the faculty of WSU in 1976 as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences, was promoted to Associate and then full Professor, appointed Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1994, Director of the School of Molecular Biosciences in 1999, and Dean of the College of Sciences, a position he held from 2003-2010. Mike became a Regents Professor of Molecular Biosciences in 2008, and in 2011, received the WSU Eminent Faculty Award, the highest faculty honor at WSU.

Mike’s research has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1977 (with the same grant “Hormonal Control of the Maturation of Sertoli Cells”), including a Research Career Develop Award (1979-1984) and MERIT Award (1997-2007). He has published more than 230 original scientific articles, book chapters, and review articles. His recognition in the field of Sertoli cell function and spermatogenesis is evidenced by his many keynote addresses that include the SSR President’s Symposium (1994 and 2007), Larry Ewing Lecture at Johns Hopkins University (2001), Andrew Nalbandov Lecture at the University of Illinois (1993), Asdell Lecture at Cornell University (2008), the Bailly Lecture at Southern Illinois University (2010), the Serono Lecturer at the Andrology Society (1994), and the Distinguished Faculty Address at WSU (1994). Mike received the WSU Sahlin Excellence in Research Award (1999) and the SSR Research Award (2006), and became an AAAS Fellow in 2009.
Mike is an exemplary mentor. He trained 7 MS students, 24 graduate students that include Mike Skinner, Ken Roberts and Leslie Heckert, and 26 postdoctoral fellows and research associates that include Carlos Morales, Kwan Hee Kim, Carol Linder, Dereck McLean, and Cathryn Hogarth. Mike received the Frontiers in Reproduction Beacon Award in 2008 for his outstanding mentoring. One of his former students, Leslie Heckert wrote: “His high expectations returned dedication, creativity and independence from the members of his laboratory, which in turn produced a vibrant and exciting research environment. He led by example, support and occasionally by providing unsolicited words of encouragement...”.

Mike has unselfishly served his profession, SSR, the Andrology Society, and the Testis Workshop. He was a member of the SSR Board of Directors (1989-1992), SSR Annual Meeting Program Chair (1998), SSR President-Elect and President (1997-1999), Andrology Society Board of Directors (2000-2003), and Program Committee Chair for Testis Workshop (1993 and 2007) and Andrology Society (1996). He served the NIH on the Reproductive Biology Study Section (1983-1987, and continues to do ad hoc reviews for the NIH. Mike has also served as an Editorial Board Member for Endocrinology, Journal of Andrology, Biology of Reproduction, Endocrine Journal, Molecular Cellular Endocrinology, and Spermatogenesis.

Mike’s contributions to Sertoli cell physiology and spermatogenesis are impressive. His lab demonstrated in 1980 that vitamin A modulated Sertoli cell function, in 1987 that vitamin A altered Sertoli cell gene expression, and in 1987 in a landmark publication with Carlos Morales, that retinol induced synchronization of seminiferous tubules in vitamin A-deficient rats. The crucial role that vitamin A plays in regulating germ cell entry into meiosis is still being investigated today not only by the Griswold lab but also by many others in the field, including Kwan Hee Kim, Peter Koopman, and David Page. Moreover, Mike’s leadership role in this area is evidenced by his collaborative publications with John McCarrey, the late Lonnie Russell, Martin Dym, Bob Braun, Kate Loveland, David Zarkower, Marvin Meistrich, and Paul Cooke.

Mike’s lab pioneered microarray/gene profiling analyses of FSH-treated Sertoli cells, beginning in 2002, followed by analysis of spermatogonial stem cells, testis, seminiferous epithelium, epididymis, spermatogenesis, and embryonic development of the testis. These databases are freely available to the scientific community. The number of investigators across the world that have used these data bases is remarkable.

A Fantastic Introduction to Virology

Fundamentals of Molecular Virology is by far one of the most readable scientific textbooks I have ever come across. The focus is on common characteristics of virus families rather than on individuals. For example, rather than having a chapter just covering the rabies virus this book has a chapter on the Rhabdovirus family and covers the mechanisms that each of the commonly studied rhabdoviruses use for each of the viral life cycle stages.

The book is also organized into orders, each of the viral orders will have their families grouped together. The rhabdovirus chapter is right next to the paramyxoviridae and filoviridae viruses to make up the mononegavirales order.

The writing is clear and concise. The style of writing is geared towards an audience with no previous virology experience and gently guides the reader through the basics of virology. Some attention is given to laboratory procedure but the book was not written as a lab manual and so it only provides a brief overview of some of the common techniques.

The biggest weakness of the book is in graphic illustration. Many of the illustrations are bland and monochromatic - there is very little use of color for a textbook this expensive.

If you are taking a virology or microbiology course I would strongly recommend that you get a copy of this book as a reference regardless of what textbook your instructor uses.

This book is perfect for the beginning/moderate virology student- concise but detailed reviews of many viruses. I highly recommend it for supplementary aid.

I found this book to be more helpful as a review than a primary source of learning, particularly because it is written in a concise manner and because I feel like the explanation of some modes of viral replication were completely lacking. Now, if the images that accompanied some of the replication processes had been better (looking at you, hepadnavirus), then I could let the lack of information slide, but it seems as if one area slacked, then they both slacked. And I do realize that trying to draw some of these processes is difficult because of how they're occurring in 3D, but many of the figures left a lot to the imagination.

Also, it would have been nice to see an attempt to present the same type of information on all the viruses. Some of the chapters were so scarce on diseases caused, what the actual virus looks like (more SEMs!), epidemiology, history/origins, etc, while other chapters were rich with this type of information. This, again, left me feeling like this book was incomplete.

Una obra práctica para el día a día

Este libro logra bajar los conceptos de coaching a la gestión diaria. Las guías prácticas para la conversación de coaching son excelentes ya que permiten estructurar las conversaciones de forma ordenada. Los ejemplos de conversaciones son muy buenos y los recursos web también.
He asistido a cursos de coaching varios y siempre me quedó la sensación de que no trenía forma de aplicar en la práctica lo aprendido. Este libro es ameno, práctico y consistente. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.
