About the Author
James Tanton was born in Adelaide, Australia, and attended the University of Adelaide. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, and has taught at New College of the University of South Florida, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Merrimack College. He has won several awards for teaching excellence. James Tanton is currently the Interim Director of Boston's Math Circle, a program of courses for students of all ages who enjoy mathematics and want the challenge of new and exciting topics. Believing that mathematics really is accessible to all, he is committed to sharing the joy and beauty of pure mathematics. He has worked with mathematics educators of all levels to help create a lively mathematics culture within school and college mathematics departments. He is a frequent contributor to the student magazine, published by The Mathematical Association of America, Math Horizons.

Insightful and Concise

Not only are these "cool problems," but also they are organized in the most useful way. In the first third of the book, Tanton states the problems. The middle section offers some hints if you are struggling, and extensions if you are not. Fortunately the hint section is not too close to the first section, so it's easier to enjoy struggling for a longer time. Finally, the solutions are given in the final section (after more delightful struggling). The explanations are concise, enjoyable, and explain the problems with more insight that most write-ups you will find in other books or online. If feels as if Mr. Tanton is there, urging you on, encouraging you, and providing the tools you need to make sense of these great problems.

I use this book (and others by Tanton) in my Math Circle, with homeschoolers, and for myself. Another easy-to-use feature is the index at the end, sorted by mathematical concept/topic.

Superb book

This is a wonderful book for students and teachers alike. Sophisticated mathematics is made accessible to everyone. Written with humor, thoughtfulness and a real sense of where people have difficulties and how to get around them, Tanton puts his finger on the pleasures and promises of each problem. Not to be missed, no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are.

As a root worker and witch that has been working with people from all background for many years, the Psalm workbook has helped me tremedously when I need simple spells. this book is must any metaphysical spiritual rootworker. this book is also very good for any novice who wishe's to begin using simple spells to achive their aims. the book is a great comfort to anyone in need of spiritual guidance, it has a Psalm for every situation.

If you are a Hoodoo spiritual practitioner - rootworker, this book will help you to locate rapidly psalms used for every occasion - for peace, protection, health, success, money, love, faith, inspiration, spiritual strength, overcome addictions, bless a new home, stop slander, restore good credit, overcome temptations, banish illness, exorcise evil, bring back a lover, heighten psychic ability, gain respect from others, and much more.

Not only are the appropriate psalms listed, but you are also guided through the rootwork you may do - sometimes the instruction is to write parts of given psalms on a parchment and carry it with you, other times are provided suggestions for candles and oils you may use, and sometimes using specific gems and herbs / roots is recommended.

PREFACE

This textbook is the fourth edition of a premier book used to educate biomedical and other technical professionals over the last two decades. Since technology advances at an ever-increasing pace, we have included some new and exciting changes, which reflect the modern world of medical instrumentation.

Part of the revision effort was a survey of instructors, successful students, managers, and clinical and biomedical engineers and technicians who ultimately employ the readers of this book. New features were added mostly in response to comments and request of the academic reader.

Since this text is broadly organized, working professionals in biomedical electronics and related fields will find it useful for looking up topics of interest and refreshing selected areas, while bypassing more familiar material. In addition, engineers and technologists, who design biomedical equipment, can easily revisit material covering the broad overview or delve into the critical points of pertinent subjects.

Important chapters added to the third edition and retained in this latest edition include information fundamental to a basic education. Chapter 3 is "Introduction to Biomedical Equipment Instrumentation and Measurement." Chapter 4 covers the "Basic Theories of Measurement" technology. Chapter 22 discusses "Computers in Biomedical Equipment," which, among other topics, includes sections on microprocessors and signal acquisition systems, as applied to medical and laboratory instrumentation. This is directed at signal measurement, analog signal processing, analog-to-digital conversion, digital-to-analog conversion, and digital signal processing. These chapters were added to reinforce the concept that many medical instruments are basically electronic measuring devices. The authors believe students need to put into action concepts of accuracy and precision when diagnosing problems and maintaining medical and laboratory equipment. Basic theory of signals and noise provides a necessary background for understanding commonly encountered signals and what to expect from observing them in analog, digital or software form, in addition to windows pull-down menus. In this way, the authors share their savvy with the reader, which has been formulated from theory and years of personal experience. Also, some of the original chapters were enhanced to better cover essential topics, such as the nature and impact of the Internet in medicine and the use of computers in analyzing medical signals, X-ray films, and patient records. In addition, we have extended many block and circuit diagrams with descriptions to improve the reader's working knowledge of biomedical equipment.

In the fourth edition, chapter 24 on "Electromagnetic Interference to Medical Electronic Equipment," including electromagnetic compatibility has been improved, because this is a major issue today, especially with the FDA. In concert, a new chapter 25 is provided on "Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement" for two reasons: First, most medical equipment manufacturers must meet ISO-9000 quality assurance standards to sell their equipment in Europe and, increasingly, also in the United States and Canada. Adherence to the recommendations of ISO-9000 may also prove beneficial in defending product liability challenges, because it reflects a manufacturer's ability to set up and consistently apply company and production procedures. Second, hospitals are being forced to provide continuous quality improvement by accreditation authorities, such as the FDA, and their ability to meet these requirements facilitates their competitive edge in the medical marketplace. In addition, chapter 16, "Medical Laboratory Instrumentation," now includes a section on hemodialysis machines to treat kidney failure, because of the increasing requirement for this technology from our aging population. Also, a description of the important Y2K problem now appears in chapter 22, "Computers in Biomedical Equipment," as well as a description of new computer devices in medicine, such as the extended interactive computer system and the palmtop or personal digital assistant (PDA).

Good book for beginners entering the field!

Book talks about human anatomy very breifly in chapter 1. I recommended taking a Anatomy & Physiology class at your local college if you did not receive a biomedical engineering degree. Chapter 2 talks about the heart and circulatory system very well. Chapter 4 talks about measurements such as direct vs. indirect measurements, null measurments, and factors that affect measurments such as error, accuracy, precision. It also discusses measurement errors. Chapter 6 is a good chapter about trasducers. Chapter 8 talks about electrocardiography and is pretty good. Chapter 9 talks about pressure, invasive blood pressure measurements, non invasive blood pressure measurements, cardiac output and thermodilution. It also discusses very well defibrillators, atrial vs. ventricular fibrillation. It also talks about pacemakers and the heart lung machine. Chapter 10 talks about human respiration and its measurements. Chapter 11 talks about respiratory therapy equipment. Chapeter 12 talks about the nervous system. Chapter 16 talks about medical lab equipment and to me the chapter is outdated as far as the equipment they discuss. Chapter 17 talks about ultrasound and is not that great. Appendix D in the book does a good job at discussing electrical safety such as micro vs. macro shock, leakage current, isolation x-formers, line isolation monitors, and GFCI's. The chapters i didn't discuss chapters 3,5,7,13-15,18-27 were not very good or informative.

Biomedical Text book 4th edition hardcover

I received this book in its plastic shrink wrap covering, thus ensuring that is was not used. Although this book is listed as the US hardcover edition, that does not necessary mean that the book is what I would call a premium edition. Although, the binding is glossy hardcover; the pages inside are a non glossy black and white, shades of grey, printing that does have a less than perfect copied appearance with a few flaws in the printing. So if you are expecting a full color illustration with glossy pages as in traaditional text books, this is not. I is my guess why this book was selling for about 1/2 the price new as other new books.
As far as content, I used this book for a semester of college class. We studied most of the chapters. Although, I thought that the chapters were well organized; much material was old and dated, though still valid. Many changes in technology and procedures have occured since then and I believe that the book needs a through updating. In conclussion, the text book did its job, and was a requirement of the class.

Highly recommended for advanced graduate students, applied mathematicians and computer scientists in the field of public key cryptography. The mathematics is more advanced than in their first book on Elliptic Curve Cryptography.

Good compact book on elliptic curves in cryptography

This book gives a good summary of the current algorithms and methodologies employed in elliptic curve cryptography. The book is short (less than 200 pages), so most of the mathematical proofs of the main results are omitted. The authors instead concentrate on the mathematics needed to implement elliptic curve cryptography. The book is written for the reader with some experience in cryptography and one who has some background in the theory of elliptic curves. A reader coming to the field for the first time might find the reading difficult. The authors do give a brief summary in Chapter 1 on the idea of doing cryptography based on group theory. They then move on to discuss finite field arithmetic in Chapter 2. The reader is expected to know some of the basic notions of multiprecision arithmetic for integers. The authors choose to work with 2^16. Psuedocode is given for doing modular arithmetic with Montgomery arithmetic given special attention. The last section of the chapter gives a good summary of arithmetic in fields of characteristic 2. Chapter 3 discusses very compactly arithmetic in elliptic curves. This is where the reader should already have the background in the theory of elliptic curves, since the reading is very fast and formal. The authors do a good job of summarizing how modular polynomials come into play in elliptic curve cryptography and give some explicit examples of these polynomials. The most important chapter of the book is Chapter 4, where the authors give a discussion of how to implement elliptic curves efficiently in cryptosystems. This chapter is nicely written and pseudocode appears many times with lots of nice examples. This chapter serves as background for the next one on the discrete logarithm problem using elliptic curves over finite fields. The MOV attack, the anomalous attack, and the baby step/giant step methods are discussed very nicely. Random methods, such as the tame and wild kangaroo are discussed at the end of the chapter.
The next three chapters concentrate on how to actually generate elliptic curves for cryptosystems, with particular attention payed to the Schoof Algorithm. The chapter on Schoof's algorithm is more detailed than the rest of the chapters and this makes for better reading. The authors do discuss how to generate curves using complex multiplication although the discussion is somewhat hurried. The next chapter discusses how elliptic curves have been applied to other areas in cryptography, such as factoring, etc. A good discussion of the ECPP algorithm on proving primality ends the chapter. The authors end the chapter with a discussion of hyperelliptic cryptography. Anyone familiar with the theory of elliptic curves and how they are applied to cryptography will naturually ask if hyperelliptic curves have any advantages over the elliptic case. The authors never really address this explicity but do give examples on just what is involved in implementing hyperelliptic curves in cryptography. Overall a fine addition to the literature on elliptic curves in cryptography. One would hope that the authors would write a follow-up book on hyperelliptic curves and maybe on general algebraic curves and their possible use in this area.

The story begins in 1629, when the pride of the Dutch East India Company, the Batavia, is on its maiden voyage en route from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies, laden down with the greatest treasure to leave Holland. Quietly, he puts forward a plan to 40 odd mutineers how they could save themselves, kill most of the rest, and spare only a half-dozen or so women, including his personal fancy, Lucretia Jansz - one of the noted beauties of Holland - to service their sexual needs. A reign of terror begins, countered only by a previously anonymous soldier, Wiebbe Hayes, who begins to gather to him those are prepared to do what it takes to survive....

An Incredible Story Poorly Told

I read the hardback edition.
The saga of the Batavia is an incredible story which really deserves to be better known. Although it is the story of the first European settlement in Australia, predating the celebrated settlement of Sydney by a century and a half, it is barely even known in that country. Although the few months of settlement was accidental and ephemeral, it is significant in human history, in that it is a consummate case study of how rapidly civilized order can fall apart, even in a supposedly sophisticated Christian society.
I will let other reviewers give a synopsis of the story. Very few accounts of the story have been told. Sadly, this is NOT the version which will satisfy serious enquiring minds. Inevitably, primary source documentation is scarce, so that any author is required to fill in the gaps, as best he/she is able, relying upon historical research of the period and their own best judgement. I make no criticism of Fitzsimons in this regard. As far as I can tell, his research is thorough and his infill is plausible.
Where his work disappoints me is in his style of story-telling. He chooses to be a narrator concurrent with the events, a fly on the wall who speaks only in the present tense, not unlike a commentator at a football match. To me, his book read like a draft film script, rather than a serious piece of history, which the material cries out for. Thus we have forced upon us infantile attempts at reconstructing verbal exchanges in direct speech, complete with old-salt gibberish. Also, he creates difficulties for himself by not being able to use modern geographical names, so that, for example, Australia is always referred to as "het Zuidland" and Cape Town as "Tafelbaii", always italicised. I am sure that some readers will go right through the text thinking that het Zuidland is some mythical land which research has not been able to identify.
Others readers might not become quite as irritated by the style as I was, and some might actually enjoy it. Clearly, Fitzsimons has adopted it to try to bring immediacy and drama to the tale, but the story is so incredible in its own right that it does not need this artifice to bring it to life. In fact, I became so irritated about half way through, that I temporarily put the book aside and read the few relevant entries in Wikipedia, plus the links to a few references. I found this more satisfying than all the melodrama in Fitzsimons' book. I did, however, complete the book.
One thing which the author does well is to simplify the Dutch naming system of the time into something manageable. Also, the photos in the book as well as their captions are excellent. On the other hand, the maps are quite inadequate. They are too small and lack grid references. Also, each map should be repeated on the facing page with modern place names. There is also a crying need for a regional map, covering the area from say Perth in the south to Exmouth in the north, showing the full extent of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands and their relationship to the adjacent mainland. This map could have been used to detail the departure route of Pelsaert towards Java, the erratic path by the recovery vessel Sardam, and the landing point of the two exiles on the West Australian coast.
Compared to the bulk of the text, I found the Introduction and the Epilogue very good. Two technical areas I would have liked to be addressed were:
1. Some discussion on the likelihood of finding ground-water on the islands, given their topography and geology; and
2. Some modern psychological insights into the human behaviour displayed by Jeronimus, his henchman and their victims.
The book could also profit from a tabular appendix listing all of the 330+ people involved, giving their name, age, where, when and by what means they met their deaths.
So the story is worth five stars and the telling of it one or two. Let's say an average of three.

A compelling true story

I have the hard copy and this review has nothing to do about the price in an electronic format or any other.
As for Peter Fitzsimons effort he probably stretches the limits in joining the threads of the factual recorded accounts but I guess he has that artistic licence. Though I have often found the author painful when in group interviews as he generally likes to dominate every conversation I do think he can write a reasonable and readable story as he did with Kokoda and now this. His enthusiasm for the project has rewarded the reader with a great story and one that all Australians should know about.
So having said that I think it's an amazing story that should end up on film and as Fitzsimons say's it's a bigger story than Titanic with every possible element. Shipwreck, Mutiny, Murder, Rape, Greed and Survival among them. The Dutch have the replica of the Batavia that must be fairly accurate in size as its mast would only fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on a low tide when it arrived during the 2000 Olympics. That ship alone would help make a wonderful movie. The Dutch could also celebrate this story being bought to the screen not so much for the brutality of it and the indifference of the first world wide corporation but for the courage and heroism of those early sea captains in those magnificent tall ships when they were such a powerful nation.

A Real Lord of the Flies

There would scarcely be an educated person in a western country today who has not heard of the mutiny on HMS Bounty. That is, the overthrow of William Bligh by a group of mutineers led by Fletcher Christian. I suspect that the number who have heard of Bligh's subsequent overthrowing in the Rum Rebellion of New South Wales would be a much lesser number. I further suspect that the number of persons who are familiar with the voyage of the Batavia and its wreck on the Abrolhos Islands would be comparatively tiny. This is a shame. The sheer horror inflicted on innocent people by the Batavia mutineers probably has few equals in maritime history.

In order to at least partly overcome this relative historical neglect, Peter FitzSimons has crafted a wonderful book. He has brought the events of 1629 to life. He is to be thoroughly commended. His technique has been to write a history book that uses a considerable degree of licence. It is not possible to have been privy to the minute details and conversations of events. However, he has remained true to the larger sweep of events. He skillfully covers the sheer horror and arrogance of the mutiny itself. He also details the subsequent events and how justice was meted out. Personally, I was pleased to see some retribution. The mutineers, in particular their leader, Jeronimus, were a hideous group.

In some respects, the Batavia wreck and mutiny seem like an adult version of Lord of the Flies. However, it was far worse. It truly knew no bounds.

I strongly recommend this book to the general history reader.

Yes let's celebrate this experience!

I love this book and I bought it as a gift for my daughter who has been complaining about her physical appearance due to her pregnancy. I'm hoping she will appreciate the beauty of the pregnant woman as captured in these wonderful photos. I only wish Ms. Garbarino had been around when I was having my own children. A photo like one of these would have been a true keepsake.

Gorgeous!

This wonderful collection presents women at a unique moment - the latest month of pregnancy, some of them just days before delivery. Each one wanted to be remembered at her fullest, so had the picture taken. (Probably many pictures, if the photo shoots in my experience mean anything.) More than that, each woman here wanted to be seen. She made her picture public, so the whole world can appreciate her as she was then.

In fact, most of the mothers-to-be made their bare selves very public, choosing outdoor settings for the camera. Some chose quiet parks and distant forest settings, but others chose city streets, the Golden Gate or Brooklyn bridge, a New York subway - the photographer herself chose Times Square when her turn came. Even with pre-dawn privacy, those are hardly private places. Perhaps that just emphasizes that so much of pregnancy is public, not just being seen grand and full, but the fact of it as experience shared between mothers everywhere, of every place and time. Garbarino underlines that universality with models from across the spectrum of color and look - whatever the outer differences, the grace of the human animal comes through the same way.

Still, these photos make clear every mother and pregnancy is unique. Brief notes by most models show how each family, each woman, even each of a woman's children is different, from the trials of difficult conception, through trials of the changing body, to the trials of delivery. And each full body seems different, too: some (like Lori and Angeliki) sleeker, others (like Debbie and Joelle) full to bursting. There's so much more to say, but really, the pictures themselves say it best. This collection is one to enjoy, not just for mothers, their partners, and even their children, but for anyone who truly delights in every part of a woman's life.

The Perfect Baby Shower Gift

This is a stunning coffee table book of pregnant nudes in the most witty and inspiring outdoor environments. Before a pregnant woman contends with the metamorphosis that is motherhood, she will experience a physical transformation that is, in its own way, as mind-boggling. The women in Ripe -- of all sizes and colors (and sexual orientations) -- meld with natural forms (trees, corn husks, sea boulders) or stand in contrast to the grittiest and most iconic urban settings. Each photo is lush and beautifully composed, some locations unbelievably daring (i.e. Times Square, a subway car, and in one heartbreaking shot, a sunny street opening on the World Trade Center) and all affirm the the goddess-like splendor of pregnancy. Several eloquent narratives by the models round out this portrait of a transient high point in our lives as women. A fun and affirmative gift for a mother-to-be.
