Make Some Paper Magic!
By Albin J. Stanish
After a summer of no school, I'm convinced of a few things: Kids do not use their brains like they could or should, Kids get bored way too easily, Kids gravitate toward screen time & Kids need creative expression to grow. Like a caped crusader, Paper Goods Projects steps in to save the day for kids, teens and even adults who are bored or zombified (new word!) by too much media. The days of old where thrift and ingenuity guided people to create their own amusements with materials at hand are long gone.
And sadly, I think something has been lost in self expression when all the toys a child has have been bought at a store. It's not about whether you can afford to buy everything they want, but should you? I think we rob children when we do not encourage them to explore, discover, and create things for themselves. Kids need the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands.
The projects in Levine's books will cost more in time than money. Most materials you probably already own or have available in your recycling bin. The main craft ingredients are things like inexpensive paper plates, toilet paper tubes, cereal boxes, muffin wrappers, and coffee filters. That just about sums up the Table of Contents: Coffee Filters & Cupcake Papers; Paper Plates, Bags & Doilies; Balloons; Recycling Bin.
The cover is an awesome enticement to explore all the fabulous projects inside some of which include: garlands, table decor, garnishing food, creating toys, mini villages and so many other fun ideas. My all time favorite project is the paper plate dessert stand. What a magical project to create for a child's tea party or play date. Let the kids help with the creating and table staging and you've got a hostess-in-the-making. With projects for a variety of ages, you'll want to return over and over again for things to do with your child.
Bright photographs throughout help spark the imagination and get creative juices flowing. Each project lists the needed supplies and follows with very clear step-by-step directions (often with photos of intermediate steps). Templates are also included for more complicated projects. The projects will appeal to kids but they will definitely need some guidance from a teen sibling or parent. For example, some initial help to dye the filters and papers as well as understanding of some of the cutting techniques will help get crafters well on their way. This is a clear, concise, creative genius of a book that I highly recommend for any parent, grandparent, child care worker or teacher.
Jodi Levine's website, Super Make It! is another treasure trove of creativity and worth a look. This book along with an assortment of the supplies needed would make an awesome birthday or Christmas gift for a child or a dynamite gift for a teacher. Go grab your copy of Paper Goods Projects and start putting some paper magic into every day!

Great for crafters with a family
By Jaymie
It's a fabulous book for crafters , especially those with children. A lot of the projects seem to be things kids would like and the photos in the book feature children. Prefect for the family.
The book is well organized. There's the contents page up front , followed by an introduction and foreword. Then it put projects into a category based on what kind of supplies are used. Theses categories are the chapters. There is coffee filters and cupcake papers, paper bags paper plates and dollies, balloons, and recycling bin stuff. So lots of around the home and recycling going on. That's a plus for projects with me. At the black of the book there's a template section filled with all the templates you'll need to make the projects in the book. Then at the end is the index. Like I said it's neat and organized.
As someone who goes to multiple parties a year and like to be the one who brings the goodie bags and loves to decorate for everything this book makes me really look foward to next chance I can get at decorating and packing goodies. It has all kinds of projects that are decorative and they have projects for favor bags too!
I haven't made a lot of the projects featured in this book but I have made a few, the ones I have made were easy and used stuff commonly found in the home. And like I said before they include templates. Just scan and print. Or even trace if you're using thin paper (not recommend but easy!) it was simple , fun and easy. They don't really mention the family touch on the book's discription but let me tell you it certainly is for crafters for any level and those with kids. I've already made a few goodies for my nephew!
Overall it's a great book my only compliant is that they don't always show photos on what to do for various steps. They have plenty of text descriptions that are very detailed and I understood them but I'm usually not good with even simple text instructions. I prefer text and photos. But that's just my learning style ,everyone is different and the steps are pretty detailed. So I don't think there will be any trouble.

Turning Recycled Materials into Crafts for Kids
By Conny
Title: Paper Goods Projects
Author: Jodi Levine
Photographer: Amy Gropp Forbes
Publisher: Potter Craft
ISBN: 978-0-8041-8695-7
“Paper Goods Projects is full of project ideas for rainy days, parties, and holidays that adults and kids can do separately or together,” the introduction states in Jodi Levine’s book.
At one hundred pages and twelve pages, this paperback targets those interested in making mainly decorations involving paper, cardboard, and balloons. Containing over sixty craft ideas, after the table of contents, a foreword by Jordan Ferney, and introduction are four sections, ending with templates, acknowledgments, and an alphabetical index by topic.
Using everyday items, Levine turns the mundane into artsy, fun crafts that both children and adults can make. Typical supplies include coffee filters, cupcake papers, paper plates, bags, doilies, balloons, and cardboard boxes and tubes to name a few.
Each of the four sections is divided by two pages, one with suggestions and ideas making crafts with the designated item. While coffee filters and cupcake papers can be dyed and turned into colorful table settings, favors, napkin rings, designer straws, and dollhouse accessories, paper plates and bags become stands, masks, tiaras, and gift toppers. Balloons are twisted into cake toppers, centerpieces, planets, and letters. Recycled materials make pop-up cards, big blocks, table villages, tube animals, and a menorah.
The projects cover one to four pages each but are mostly one page of instructions with one full-page, full-color photograph on its opposite page. Usually after a title in a colored font and a paragraph underneath, supplies are listed in bold print in used order with numbered instructions in sentence format. Occasionally there are small photographs showing the step-by-step process. Having nine pages of templates at the back of the book is helpful.
With such an eclectic combination of crafts to choose, the book mainly targets concepts for children to make. Only a few ideas work for adults to use as classy decorations. It is a good source of activities for when kids are bored on those indoor days, during art classes, or at day camps using inexpensive or recycled materials.
A lifelong crafter, author Levine worked nineteen years on Martha Stewart’s staff as craft editor and editorial director for two of her magazines and product designer for her popular line of crafts. She lives in New York with her husband and sons.
