About the Author
I am an acupuncturist and Buteyko Breathing teacher with my own practice in Dublin (Ireland) since February 2001. I have been practicing acupuncture for over 14 years and have trained in various forms of what I feel are the most powerful acupuncture systems around. I trained full time in China after studying for a year in Ireland. I have spent almost 18 months in total studying in the International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanjing and I interned with many of their affiliated hospitals. I have spent almost 6 months as an Intern with Dr. Han Yan studying abdominal acupuncture (Fu Zhen). I currently teach abdominal acupuncture (AA) to final year and qualified acupuncturists through my Centreforce school, I am also a published author of a number of articles on the subject of abdominal acupuncture. This is my first book on “Mastering the Art of Abdominal Acupuncture” and it is intended as a teaching manual for qualified acupuncturists and students of acupuncture. I have spent over 3 years writing this book and it is a culmination of 14 years practical clinical experience using AA in my clinic Dan-Tien Complementary Health Studio, and also from my experiences teaching AA through Centreforce Abdominal Acupuncture. I am currently living in Wicklow and have a practice there and in Dublin……..

Very thorough and well structured text on Bo Zhiyun's method.

I've been an acupuncturist for about 20 years now; and have heard about Bo Zhiyun's method of abdominal acupuncture; but had not had the opportunity to study and apply it. I recently picked up this volume; and read it over the weekend. The author presents the material very thoroughly in such a way that any reasonably experienced acupuncturist should be able to apply it. After reading the book over the weekend, I returned to clinic; and, when appropriate, applied it. Worked brilliantly. One of the nice things about this method is that it is completely painless, and can address symptoms throughout the body.

This book is well structured; and is the distillation of the author's teaching the material over several years. The only criticism I have is over the graphics. They are just too small for people like myself who have bad eyesight. Fortunately, there are some larger charts in the back. I highly recommend this for any acupuncturist wanting to add a new tool to his toolbox.

dave is amazing, I didn't know much about abdominal acupuncture other ...

dave is amazing, I didn't know much about abdominal acupuncture other than its distal nature....using the stomach as the main focus of its points. I enjoyed his book not only from a "writing" perspective but also from an instructional perspective. I am know using abdominal points, based on this book, and I have totally enjoyed the results...and so have my patients. Very cool! on many levels, im phsyced about it and cant wait to learn more!!!

It is a beautiful system that works painlessly and precisely especially for pain ...

I have been an acupuncturist for 20 years. There are many systems of acupuncture other than what we have originally learned in school. Korean Hand, scalp, auricular, Tan/Tung-- to name a few. I have studied these systems and find them all extremely valuable depending on the situation. And now for another system, abdominal.
I purchased Dave Shipsey's book a month ago and am now on my second reading of the material. It is compelling. It is a beautiful system that works painlessly and precisely especially for pain conditions. I feel there is poetry here in being able to image the body based on the image of the turtle and the ba gua. I am of the opinion that it is able to address the "root" of many conditions, going beyond the "branch."
I became so excited when I read this book, and I just so happened to have a patient vacationing in Ireland. I asked her to contact Dave Shipsey for an appt. as I wanted to hear her firsthand account of this method. She saw him for knee pain, hip pain and diabetic neuropathy. We talked on the phone shortly after her treatment. She was very enthusiastic and felt definite improvement in her painful conditions. She told me the treatment didn't hurt one bit. She confirmed the claims Dave had made in his book.
The book is very clearly written and one can learn the system from it. That being said, I hopefully will be able to take a training in this method at some point. Definitely 5 stars!

I found Jonathan's book a quick read jam-packed with excellent suggestions to guide anyone to a successful path in speaking. Marion Gibson is Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus. Her previous books include Reading Witchcraft (Routledge, 1999), Early Modern Witches (Routledge, 2000) and Possession, Puritanism and Print (2005).

Good book poorly cataloged

Much can be learned about trends in American politics, religion, social movements, and even science by examining how we have viewed witchcraft in this country. Dr. Gibson is a British literature professor and researcher. She took up the task of examining various aspects of witchcraft in America. Naturally, the events in Salem, MA are examined, but so are the different ways it has been portrayed and explained-whether as a statement about feminism, racism, science, or patriotism-and what it says about the culture at the time those theories were presented. She also examines the various ways witches are portrayed in popular culture: witches in TV shows like Bewitched or Charmed, Wiccans in the media from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to The Blair Witch Project, or "witch hunts" portrayed in the Crucible.

Though this book is hardly a page-turner, it is a valuable read for anyone interested in witchcraft history, the history of Wicca in America, or looking for one aspect of pop culture's mirroring of mores and social expectations. It is not a primer on the practice of witchcraft, nor does it promote or denigrate aspects of it. It is not intended to provide a definitive history on the topic of witchcraft, but to be a mirror on what history has said about it.

And just a side beef with this-it's put in the BF section based on Library of Congress classification, which is all wrong. That's where books on the occult go. This is not a book about the occult-you won't find spells or instructions on how to call corners or thoughts about spirituality at all. It is a book about how we as a nation have historically viewed contemporary and historical accounts of occult happenings. It belongs in the E section, in history.

Planning to learn German? Start with this, first.

Anyone desiring to learn German should start with this. I was initially using Edward Swick's "The Everything Essential German Book", when I came upon "TY Getting Started in German - Absolute Beginner Course" kit at my Library by accident. The one I borrowed (then, later, purchased) had an mp3 audio cd. I downloaded the lessons, first, to my computer; then copied them to my mp3 player. There are ten chapters / units, with sufficient lessons, with easy explanations, and cultural anecdotes. I just finished Unit 1, and I'm (eagerly) preparing to start Unit 2. I'll listen to the lesson on my player on my train ride to work Monday morning! The book has colorful artwork and photos - a very nice plus in the 'Teach Yourself' language series. There is grammar, which is important in learning languages. However, the grammar is concise and not long-winded. The 'Personal Introduction' and 'How to Use this Book' sections explains that in detail. I found out online that German grammar have noun cases (I think) called 'accusative', 'nominative' and 'dative'. They sound a bit deep for me - yet I will learn those in time when I read "Everything Essential German". Right now, I want to have fun learning basic Deutsch! Another good book I'm using with "Get Started in German" is Angela Wilkes' "German for Beginners". This, too, is helpful in learning basic German, and with amusing colorful illustrations. I ordered mine from Amazon.com, but from a seller in the UK. Anyway, I recommend Get Started in German (book and mp3 cd set) as a fine introduction to learning German. Best regards, and "Tschus!" :)

Classic and Inspiring Work on Bodyweight Exercise

This book explains how Hershel Walker worked out as young man with nothing but pushups, pull-ups, and running to get in great physical shape for football. The story is inspiring because it shows that fancy equipment and gym memberships are not needed to get in great shape. All you need is desire and consistency to DO these basic exercises.

The book includes a workout schedule that is designed to increase effort over time. You will have to find a pull-up bar to do the program.

I bought the book on Amazon and paid a collector's price, but it was well worth it. I gave the book to my boys and it inspired them to do push-ups and pull-ups in their room every night before going to bed.

Herschel walker has been a hero and role model of mine for a long time, especially now that he is fighting competitively in his late 40's. The book shows a number of different push up variations in addition to Mr. Walkers personal experiences with different types of exercise. Robust and comprehensive guide to the new SAT's grammar

As an SAT tutor, I recommend certain books to my students so that they can accomplish as much as possible outside of my office. The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar is the most helpful book I've yet seen for the new SAT (which will debut in March of 2016). Here are a few reasons why:

1. The book is comprehensive. I've been teaching SAT prep for a long time, and most of my students are fairly to highly serious about their scores. I'm glad to be able to offer them a workbook that covers everything, rather than one that covers most of the test.

2. Practice question realism is very good. It's essential that students get used to the nuances and style of the real test, and unlike books published by most companies, this one aptly mimics the complexities of real SAT passages and questions.

3. It's up-to-date. The new SAT writing section is much different than that of the current SAT. This book reflects all the changes we know about right now.

4. The book cross-references the College Board / Khan Academy tests, so that students can look up authentic questions on which to practice concepts.

The only real criticism I have of the book is the formatting and look - it might be easier for certain students to use if the graphic design and layout were more engaging. But this is easily the best book on the market for students who truly want to understand the material.

A favorite for both tutor and student

I agree with Vince Kotchian on all his points. I am a tutor and I know my students work well with the lessons in this book. They read the grammar rules for a topic like subject-verb agreement, then they do her exercises. Step by step, my students master each rule. I'm so glad she took the time to make up so many questions for practice. I can assign some for HW after we do a few together. It's great for self-prep as well.

DO NOT USE!

Like the others who have reviewed this book, I am a professional test prep instructor (GMAT, SAT and ACT). I'm not sure what the other instructors see in this book, but there are clearly a lot of errors. Since this is about the new SAT, I'd expected the usual errors, such as typos and mistakes in underlining or answer choices. What I did not expect were mistakes with basic subject-verb agreement and rudimentary grammar. For example, in English, the words some, any, none, all and most can be used as singular or plural. "Some food is on the table." "Some guests are sitting at the table." Yet the author says "any" and "none" are only singular while the others are only plural. Thus, in the book, the use of "any" (I forgot the exact sentence) was used incorrectly in a sentence in a practice exercise. I believe it was something like, "If any participants are sick..." This, according to the book, is grammatically incorrect. It should read, "If any participants is sick..." After seeing this, we no longer use this book at work.

I realize I'm in the minority here, so for the sake of the students learning from this book I sincerely hope the author corrects her mistakes in later editions.

The discussion covers the history and community of weblogs, contrasts weblogs and traditional journalism, and offers advice on starting a weblog. If you have been following weblogs for the past few years you've probably come across many of these articles online, but having them available in one collection gives them context. A glossary and good references round out this well-edited anthology. Blood's enthusiasm for the subject carries over to her own work, The Weblog Handbook, which is not the do-it-yourself technique book you might expect. Instead, Blood takes on the role of mentor; she's been there and done that and has much wisdom to share. She is eager to convert readers into bloggers and offers good advice on finding one's voice, observing etiquette, and living online. Unfortunately, a lengthy afterword that focuses on the culture of weblogs seems a better fit for We've Got Blog. Appendixes offer a brief glimpse of creating a test weblog and working with links, but this book is written for someone who has flirted with the idea of starting a weblog and feels comfortable jumping right into the format. These titles are unique, as the publishing world is just catching up to the subject of weblogs. (Look for similar publications in the near future.) Both books are suited for public and academic libraries, but smaller public libraries might want to hold off to see whether a more practical do-it-yourself guide on blogging emerges. Nicely Done

Rebecca Blood's account of blogging, her story from the early days to the present, woven into a neatly structured account of what blogging is and how to go about it, is a pleasant read. The book is not technically deep nor philosophically profound, but well written and pitched at an appropriate level for the average starting web-logger.

One of the ways to measure the value of a book is to ask if the reading of it has changed the way one does things. The question is not so much "What did I learn?" but "What impact did this have on what I do?"

The answer, of course, is person bound; a book that has changed the way I behave may have no impact on someone else's actions. Rebecca Blood had a direct influence on my projects. For example, WikiDiction now has a space for linking to relevant quality blogs; added after finishing the chapter "Finding an Audience".

Makes me want to start my own weblog today!

I like Rebecca's Pocket and have been considering starting my own blog so I purchased this book. The best thing about this book is that Rebecca is obviously very enthusiastic aboout blogging, especially about what it can do for the confidence and writing abilities of the blogger. The book gives some practical questions potential bloggers need to ask themselves before starting a blog. The only reason this book isn't rated higher is that it is a little outdated - but it still has good information.

Did I end up starting a blog after reading a book? Not yet. I still haven't been able to answer for myself the question posed by Rebecca, "If you spend 8 hours + a day in front of the computer for work, are you willing to spend an additional few hours in front of a computer at home writing your blog?"

decent and wise counsel

Rebecca Blood loves her craft.

In a world moving as fast as the cyberworld is, a book written in 2002 and reviewed now in 2007 is bound to show its age. The Weblog Handbook does so.

Yet for sheer, innocent (but not inexpert), joyful description of a weblog community that discovered itself almost accidentally between 1999 and 2002, this delightful little book is both a period piece and a still-useful introduction to weblogging for novices.

Seven well-written chapters make the experience of reading this old-media production (ironies abound) a pleasure.

'What is a Weblog?' (chapter one, pp. 1-25) does what its title makes obvious. Along the way, the author utilizes her impeccably accessible prose to highlight the serendipitous, communal, and artistic-creative aspects of most blogs, or at least of those that set the movement afoot.

Blood's second chapter (her generous first-person style makes a reviewer who has never met her refer to her simply as 'Rebecca'; 'Why a Weblog?', pp. 27-37) dispenses wisdom regarding how the beast can take over the life of the beast-er. She indicates three motives for blogging: 'information sharing, reputation building, and personal expression', with careful attention to what the practice does for the writer as well as for the reader. The secret is to align what one already does with one's life as Daily Chronicler of Something.

Chapter three ('Creating and Maintaining Your Weblog', pp. 39-57) puts the 'p' in the first word of the author's subtitle. A newbie in the field will appreciate the absence of condescension as Blood introduces him to the nuts and bolts of his new hobby.

Every successful artist or otherwise public persona experiences that memorable moment when she understands who she is in her given role and why that is a natural place to be. According to Rebecca Blood, bloggers are no different (Chapter four, 'Finding Your Voice', pp. 59-76). Though she gives due attention to the blogger-audience dynamic from several angles, she is very much aware that a blogger who wants her craft to be an integral aspect of her life finds her voice (including the topic upon which she can write knowledgeably) and sticks with it.

Rebecca concludes 'Finding an Audience' (chapter five, pp. 77-99) with this judicious and provocative statement: 'If your objective in keeping a weblog is to gain a wide audience, I advise you to quite today. Webloggers who care about the size of their audience are always unhappy.'

By the time she has worked her way to that declaration, however, she has provided twenty pages of helpful guidance to, well, finding and building an audience. One gains the impression that here is a woman of balance, willing to help you do the thing you want to do but aware that it may turn out to be something other than that. Kudos to her for writing a professional manual that takes itself with appropriate levity.

Blood utilizes her sixth chapter to blend garden-variety journalistic ethics and etiquette with the peculiar idealism of the early weblogging community (chapter six, 'Weblog Community and Etiquette', pp. 101-125). Though she breaks her counsel into 'do not do' and 'do' categories, her approach is not rigid. Rather it is altruistic, idealistic, and communal. Even if those traits do not guarantee a better world, they are better than their alternatives. Blood capably guides the novice through the unspoken expectations that linger like minefields before the new weblogger who is clueless, belligerent, or some combination of the two. Reader beware.

Chapter seven ('Living Online', pp. 127-145), provides Blood with her clearest opportunity to disclose what the experience of doing what the title suggests has meant to this civil and entertaining author of 'Rebecca's Pocket'. As with so much of what she has written here, the basic principle is common sense, even if that uncommon virtue must now be applied to a recent and uncongealed new medium of public disclosure. Living online does not mean that the blogger or his friends, acquaintances, and even the defenseless objects of his drive-by observations do not preserve and need a private life. Blood offers sensible guidance for observing those limits and avoiding the unwelcome intrusions to which technology has added such unwelcome afterlife.

An afterword and several appendices complete a fine introduction to what in the hands of some must be regarded as a craft.

When entering theological seminary many years ago, I was urged to read Helmut Thielicke's A LITTLE EXERCISE FOR YOUNG THEOLOGIANS. That slim, heartfelt volume did not teach anyone how to be a good theologian, yet it punched above its weight by setting a course for decent progress by practitioners of a craft who would now be more aware of self and community than would have been the case had Thielicke kept his pen locked away.

Rebecca Blood's little book does the same for aspiring bloggers. Perhaps all that one has with which to repay her are five well-earned stars.

Shell Scott Read them All Years Ago

I just read the review by RAW, and I have all of the same Memories. I even wrote to Richard Prather when I was in my Junior year of High School 1959 and he wrote me back. My teacher thought it was advanced reading for a 16 yr old, but compared to todays books, it was NOTHING. My Mother was a Mystery reader, so I followed in her steps and am still reading them. I remember his Caddy and his Nude over his fireplace (Amanda I think?) Some Violence, no language that I can remember and nothing visual in the sex, just imagined. Fun and exciting. I read EVERY book that he wrote, and am going to read them all again. I just ordered 5 of them and have read 2 and laughed all the way through them. (in between the Hunger Games) Buy one and check him out, it's worth it. Carol

Shell Scott a favorite from my teens

Brought back many memories of my favorite detective over 50 years ago. Shell solved everything without a cell phone. I still remember his 42 Cadillac from other books. I'm sure Richard S. Prather would hate the Kindle I've used to re-read a few of his efforts. Hard to show over 25,000,000 sold on a digital reader.
