About the Author
Julie Miller is from Daytona State College, where she has taught developmental and upper-level mathematics courses for 20 years. Prior to her work at Daytona State College, she worked as a software engineer for General Electric in the area of flight and radar simulation. Julie earned a bachelor of science in applied mathematics from Union College in Schenectady, New York, and a master of science in mathematics from the University of Florida. In addition to this textbook, she has authored several course supplements for college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus, as well as several short works of fiction and nonfiction for young readers.
My father is a medical researcher, and I got hooked on math and science when I was young and would visit his laboratory. I can remember using graph paper to plot data points for his experiments and doing simple calculations. He would then tell me what the peaks and features in the graph meant in the context of his experiment. I think that applications and hands-on experience made math come alive for me and I’d like to see math come alive for my students.

Molly ONeill is from Daytona State College, where she has taught for 22 years in the School of Mathematics. She has taught a variety of courses from developmental mathematics to calculus. Before she came to Florida, Molly taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, and Oakland Community College. Molly earned a bachelor of science in mathematics and a master of arts and teaching from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Besides this textbook, she has authored several course supplements for college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus and has reviewed texts for developmental mathematics.
I differ from many of my colleagues in that math was not always easy for me. But in seventh grade I had a teacher who taught me that if I follow the rules of mathematics, even I could solve math problems. Once I understood this, I enjoyed math to the point of choosing it for my career. I now have the greatest job because I get to do math every day and I have the opportunity to influence my students just as I was influenced. Authoring these texts has given me another avenue to reach even more students.

Nancy Hyde served as a full-time faculty member of the Mathematics Department at Broward College for 24 years. During this time she taught the full spectrum of courses from developmental math through differential equations. She received a bachelor of science degree in math education from Florida State University and a master’s degree in math education from Florida Atlantic University. She has conducted workshops and seminars for both students and teachers on the use of technology in the classroom. In addition to this textbook, she has authored a graphing calculator supplement for College Algebra.
I grew up in Brevard County, Florida, where my father worked at Cape Canaveral. I was always excited by mathematics and physics in relation to the space program. As I studied higher levels of mathematics I became more intrigued by its abstract nature and infinite possibilities. It is enjoyable and rewarding to convey this perspective to students while helping them to understand mathematics.

Prealgebra and Intro Algebra

The item is fine, I mean it is a math book so you can't get to excited. The one thing about the book that was sent was it was the teacher's manual that was sent with black tape placed over the label that noted it as the teacher's manual. Not sure about what happended and why the black tape.

The main contribution of one unit, the Federal Writers Project, was the American Guide Series, a collectively composed set of guidebooks to every state, most regions, and many cities, towns, and villages across the United States.

The WPA arts projects were poised on the cusp of the modern bureaucratization of culture. They occurred at a moment when the federal government was extending its reach into citizens' daily lives. The 400 guidebooks the teams produced have been widely celebrated as icons of American democracy and diversity. Clumped together, they manifest a lofty role for the project and a heavy responsibility for its teams of writers. The guides assumed the authority of conceptualizing the national identity.

In The WPA Guides: Mapping America Christine Bold closely examines this publicized view of the guides and reveals its flaws. Her research in archival materials reveals the negotiations and conflicts between the central editors in Washington and the local people in the states. Race, region, and gender are taken as important categories within which difference and conflict appear. She looks at the guidebook for each of five distinctively different locations -- Idaho, New York City, North Carolina, Missouri, and U.S. One and the Oregon Trail--to assess the editorial plotting of such issues as gender, race, ethnicity, and class.

As regionalists jostled with federal officialdom, the faultlines of the project gaped open. Spotlighting the controversies between federal and state bureaucracies, Bold concludes that the image of America that the WPA fostered is closer to fabrication than to actuality. Christine Bold is director of the Centre for Cultural Studies and an associate professor of English at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario.

So-so look at a great American enterprise

The American Guides to the 48 states, select cities, and other geographical/historical places published by the government in the late 1930s-early 1940s were many things to many people: New Deal Progressive ideology, state boosterism, national unity, etc. Bold looks at five guidebooks and finds the following in four of them:

Idaho: the first book, edited and totally controlled by Vardis Fisher, offering a "frontier man's" view of the state and among the best of the guidebooks published;

New York City: an ideological battleground between left and right that came to celebrate economic and cultural diversity;

North Carolina: filled with local color and racial prejudice, the "haves vs. the have-nots";

Missouri: where local color was bleached out by the heads in Washington when the book was taken out of the hands of local writers; result: a bland, flavorless guide.

Many of Bold's points are based solely on the illustrations in the guides. She also says nothing about the other guides, so the title of the book is somewhat misleading: there is a lot more about the guides left out than discussed. She writes in a pedestrian, academic style, too, which is not appealing. I expected more from this book and was generally disappointed.

Academic beyond the call of duty

I bought this hoping that it would be a good, general assessment of the WPA Series, their accuracy, and their lasting impact. Alas, it turned out to be an almost ureadable piece of academese, interested only in how the governmental structure of the Guides' authorship muted the voices of protest and dissention -- as though any government, anywhere, has ever done otherwise, and without regard to how strikingly honest some of the guides (such as the first editions of the Washington DC and New Jersey Guides) were about issues such as racism and labor unrest. The study is weakened imeasurably by a narrow focus on only a few of the Guides; most US research libraries have most or all of them available. Ms. Bold's is also wanting; no focus on the writers (such as Cheever, Wright, and Algren) who participated in the project, no catalogue of the guides (which extended to regions, cities, and even small towns, and included local ephemera), and no mention of the best-known citation of the Guides in her consideration of their reputation: Steinbeck's pean to them in Travels with Charley. This could have been a good and useful study of the Guides; instead, it is worse than useless. Rather than a discussion of the facts paired with an analysis, Ms. Bold chose to publish a sterling example of why it is that historical writing is usually equated with tedium and polemics.

A WONDERFUL LIFE GUIDE

LIFE MANAGEMENT (FEEL GOOD FACTORY ON) is a wonderful guide packed with various techniques to help reduce our daily mental and physical stress. Our lives are very busy and many times we feel like there's a ton on our shoulders. This great book is designed with helpful tips to lessen the burden so that we can function more productively, without the stress and anxiety. Highly recommended.

As someone who has read her share of self-help, this was one of the those that was filled with platitudes and repetition. Nice thing about Kindles: easy to delete badly written books...I would have been more upset if it had cost me anything. Ever heard the expression "you get what you pay for"? Well, that's what I got with this oddly phrased "book".

Repeat after me: "Hap and Leonard kick [...]

The author I've read the most is Stephen King at 17 books to date. Joe R. Lansdale is second with 10. Those numbers might not be impressive, but I try to read a little from a lot of different authors. Anyway, books like SAVAGE SEASON - or anything with Hap and Leonard - are why I like Lansdale's writing so much.
For those of you that don't know, SAVAGE SEASON is the novel that introduces Hap Collins, a straight white liberal ex-con, and Leonard Pine, a humorously cocky black homosexual Vietnam veteran. Hap and Leonard catch news that a hundred grand is deep down in an East Texas river. Joining the hunt are three Sixties radicals. One of these radicals is Hap's ex-wife Trudy. Hap and Leonard are soon doublecrossed by the radicals, who still haven't given up their dreams of revolution. The radicals, along with Hap and Leonard, are betrayed by one of their own to a far worse criminal.
This novel like a lot of Lansdale's work is violent, raunchy, funny, and not written to appease political correctness factions. Though the later Hap and Leonard novels like BAD CHILI and MUCHO MOJO are a bit more colorful, SAVAGE SEASON is the best place to start for the uninitiated.

THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO A FANTASTIC SERIES!!!

SAVAGE SEASON by Joe R. Lansdale is the first novel in the "Hap Collins/Leonard Pine" series and clearly demonstrates the path to be taken by these utterly outrageous, yet definably noble characters. As the novel starts out, Hap and Leonard are doing okay. They have steady jobs in the rose fields and are taking a day off to shoot some skeet in the field behind Hap's house. Yep, everything is going pretty good until trouble walks around the corner of the house in the form of Trudy (Hap's ex-wife). Now, I don't know if Mr. Lansdale ever met my ex-girlfriend, but his description of Trudy fits her like a tight pair of spandex pants. Every time Trudy steps back into Hap's life and then leaves him again, it takes several months for him to recover. Needless to say, Leonard hates this lady for the way she treats his best friend. Anyway, Trudy has what appears to be a sweet deal for her loving ex-husband. It seems that one of her other ex-husbands, Howard, was in jail with a man who'd helped to rob a bank of one million dollars. All of the bank robber's cohorts were killed during or after the crime, and he almost bought the farm himself when he crashed his getaway boat into a submerged tree stump somewhere along the Sabine River. The money was never recovered, and the bank robber got life in prison. He gave Howard a general location of where he thought the sunken boat might be, hoping that if Howard were able to find the money, he'd share some of it with him to make his stay in prison a little easier. Since Hap knows the Sabine River like the back of his hand (well, maybe not quite that good), Trudy enlists Hap's help in locating the boat, offering him $200,000.00 for his services. Knowing Trudy as well as he does, Hap immediately gets Leonard to join in so that they can watch each other's backs. It isn't long before our East Texan duo find themselves caught in the middle of a betrayal that surprises neither one of them. The only real question is whether or not they will live long enough to see who actually ends up with the money. SAVAGE SEASON, though not as long or rich in detail as the other novels in the series, is still a fun, fast-paced read. The bantering and interaction between Hap and Leonard is what hooks you into this fantastic series. These two characters come alive in ways that other authors should take a look at. There's a lot to be learned here. Also, this novel offers a good deal of background information on both Hap and Leonard. This is stuff I didn't know because I started reading the series from the middle, then worked forward, and finally finished with the first novel, when I should've started with it to begin with. This sounds like something Hap and Leonard would do. Anyway, I enjoyed finding out why Hap had gone to prison as a young adult, how Trudy came into his life (she's referred to in a number of the other books), how he and Leonard met, and Leonard's background as a Vietnam vet. This information filled in a lot of blanks for me. For me, Mr. Lansdale's prose was smoothly written, offering a glimpse of how he would later develop into the author that he is today. All in all, this was an excellent read for me, and I was sorry to have the story end. I can't thank Joe R. Lansdale enough for this fabulous series. I only wish that he could write a "Hap/Leonard" book every year, while also doing his stand-alone novels. I hope that one of the novels in this series will eventually be done as a movie with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson in the roles of Hap and Leonard. That would be the dessert after a delicious three-course meal!!

The first in an amazing series involving Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, two most unlikely heroes (though heroes they are). The author performs a powerful magic that transforms a tale with a violent twist about characters that are theoretically undesireable into something unique and hard to put down or forget. Furthermore, should you never laugh out loud when reading this and don't feel moved to buy one of the other Hap & Leonard books I'll be surprised. The story, set in East Texas, is about a treasure hunt, Hap's old girl and much more. Caveat: this is perhaps the weakest of the series - it still rates 5 stars.
